Lacuna Coil Gothic Metal

Recommended Posts

Lacuna Coil have become such an important band in the gothic metal scene they do not need introduction. Hailing from Milan, Italy, the band mixes typical metal elements with subtle arrangements and an amazing vocal performance, that manages to create a perfect harmony between male and female voices. In the year 1996, Lacuna Coil (at the time called Ethereal, name that abandoned for it was already taken) sent a two track demo tape to several record labels across Europe. After changing to Lacuna Coil, that means Empty Spiral, the band signed with Century Media. It was under the Century Media seal that the band recorded their self titled, in the year of 1997, at Woodhouse Studio in Hagen, Germany, having Waldemar Sorychta as the producer. At the time, the band line up was Andreas Ferro, male vocals and lyrics; Cristina Scabbia, female vocals and lyrics; Raffaele Zagaria, guitars; Marco Zelati, bass guitar; Claudio Leo, guitars and Leonardo Forti, drums. But that was about to change, as the band went on tour for the first time, supporting Moonspell. During the tour, the band suffered a great line up change and Markus from Kreator did the drum parts, while Anders from Tiamat did the guitar parts. Thanks to their precious help, the tour was saved. In January of the next year, Cristiano Migliore (Thy Nature) joins the band as the guitar player, and so does Cristiano Mozzati (Time Machine), as the drummer. A new era on Lacuna Coils history had began. The self titled is released in 1998 and the band perform at Lisbons Colliseum, opening for Moonspell. It was Lacuna Coils first experience with such a large audience of 4000 people. With this, the band start their second European tour, this time supporting The Gathering and Seigmen.Despite the success of the tour, with many sold out shows, Cristiano Migliore injures himself and does not join it, and is replaced by Steve Minelli (Node) for the tour. Meanwhile, Alice Chiarelli joins on keys.Still in 1998, the band plays on the Wacken Open Air Festival, which is probably the most important metal festival in Europe. The response of the public was very good and Lacuna Coil decide that due to the nature of their musical direction a second guitarist was necessary, instead of a keyboard player. Finally, in October of the same year, the band records their first full length album, In a Reverie. The album was recorded in the same studio as before, with Waldemar as a producer, and it resulted in a truly professional record, a real album. In the beginning of 1999, Lacuna Coil gain their second guitar player, Marco Biazzati, and the bands line-up is finally defined. Later that year, the band embark on another tour with Skyclad. What followed was a very intense tour with Samael, My Insanity and Grip Inc. It allowed Lacuna Coil to become better live musicians, with one of the highlights of their career happening at this time, the show in Polands Metal Mania Festival, where the band plays in front of a 5000 audience that causes a great impact on its members. This positive reaction from the public is enhanced when the band returns to Italy, to play at the Gods of Metal festival. Some more gigs follow this event, this time Lacuna Coil visit the Netherlands, and some months later, Germany as Lacrimosas support act.In 2000, the band record the Half Life EP, at Damage Inc Records, Waldemar still handling the production. The EP shows Lacuna Coils first approach on digital recording technique and Italian lyrics. For the first time, the band is the headliner of a tour, and with their own sound engineer and crew, the tour is a success, despite some accidents. After some festivals in their hometown Milan, the band take some time for some well deserved rest.In October of the same year, the band is ready to record their second full length album, and for that they return to Woodhouse Studios and once more, Waldemar Sorychta assists the production. The result is Unleashed Memories, a beauty and emotional piece of music that shows a notorious evolution from the In a Reverie Days. After the release of the album, Lacuna Coil head off for a Mexican tour, with Theatre of Tragedy, that also joins LC on the next European tour, with Beseech. This tour was very positive and gained the band a lot of new fans, as well as pleased those who already knew it.The next year, 2001, was full of great concerts for the band, with such bands as In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Nevermore and Susperia. Many festivals follow, like Wacken Open Air and Summer Breeze, that allow the band to show its true potential to the public. In October, the band starts working on the next album, and in December, Lacuna Coil have their first North American tour with their old friends Moonspell. It was a landmark for the band, to be able to play over seas, and the tour was considered great. In 2002, the band start recording the next album. Once again, Waldemar handles the production and the result is what has been considered Lacuna Coils masterpiece, Comalies, and was hailed by the press through out Europe and the rest of the world as a jewel of emotional crafted and technical gothic metal, achieving a balance between the more up beat rhythms and the darker/heavier passages and arrangements, that can only be considered as harmonious and out standing. An European Tour issues after the release of Comalies, supporting Sentenced.Overall, Lacuna Coil distinguish themselves as the ultimate leaders of the Italian gothic metal scene. With Comalies, the band established that status beyond the shadow of the doubt. Combining extreme emotional depth and technical knowledge, Lacuna Coil manage to evolve without losing their originality. Mixing English lyrics with an occasional experience with Italian lyrics, their mother tongue, Lacuna Coil are indeed, a force to be reckoned with, a proof that Southern European countries also have a word to say when it comes to metal music.Info taken from http://www.lacunacoil.it/
