Recommended Posts

Hi,let me introduce to you OpenDNS. It's a free DNS (domain name server) which has got a lot of features that improve your web experience.First of all, it speeds up your current internet connection, because OpenDNS has a very extensive DNS cache. It also allows allows you to block domains (custom) or use single content filters (phising, porn...) in one computer or the whole network. It has an URL correction feature which helps to correct tipos, e.g.: .cmo -> .comFinally, you can set up shortcuts in your address bar, e.g.: you type 'host', 'http://forums.xisto.com/&; loads.I've been using this for a few weeks now and it is really useful. I hope you'll like too!

I have only used OpenDNS a few times as my computer's preferred DNS server, simply because I found using my own Internet Service Provider's DNS servers much more convenient and quicker to respond because they are geographically located closer to me. However, the OpenDNS's DNS service were quite useful when my ISP's DNS servers did go down for a few days, allowing me to switch to a backup source of DNS information and re-connecting back to the Internet until my ISP fixed the problem. The only disadvantage with the free OpenDNS plan is that ads appear if you try and visit a non-existent domain or one that has been blocked on their filters.

It is a good service, but i cant deal with that annoying ad page if i type something wrong. I just cant deal with that! I prefer a "cant find it" page or a google page, not that rubbish.Useful as a backup though.

This is quite a good service, it was actually implemented at my school as a cheap method to block people from things like facebook at school.Although it is a system that you can block bad website such as pornography, or things like facebook, I found that there is a very very simple bypass to the service.Seeing as the bypass is so easy to use, and works just wonderful, I don't like the system all too much, but there is no real way that they can improve on this bypass, they just have to hope people don't find it.As for myself, I used it temporarily on my home network and found no speed difference, and maybe at times even slower speeds although I cannot say for certain. Over all it is a decent service for something being free, but there is always room for improvement.
