Why Are Commercials Getting So Retarded?

Recommended Posts

Commercials seem to be getting dumber and dumber these days. It seems like the more popular the bisiness, the stupider their commercials get. For example, have you noticed that they only have 1 guy talking on the Geico commercials. I think that by far they have put out the worst commercials I have ever seen. What horrible commercials have you seen lately?

that guy for the Chilis ad where his wife says from the other room "clear or red" and he runs to the kitchen pulling off his tie and he realizes she's talking about tupperware (what they're eating for dinner) instead of what she's wearing. Oh or the viagra ones where the guy grows devil horns and runs into the laungerie shop and the voiceover says something like "what ever happened to that guy that was called 'the beast' in college. he spent all of your honeymoon in bed." Blah I'm so sick of those kinds of ads

How about the new got milk commercial that contains the Pillsbery (or however it's spelled) dough boy and a whole bunch of italians dancing around. Then they find out they don't have any milk.Whatever happened to the coke commercials with the polar bears. I thought they were cool.

Once upon a time, ads were about products, not about the person for whom the product is intended. Over the years, ads have become projections of an image, rather than demonstrations of a product's quality. Take for example any one of the plentiful medicine ads. The whole time the voice-over is going, we see happy people dancing in green fields in the background. Medicine will not solve all your problems!

The root cause of this change, in my opinion, is the loss of identity in today's culture. People today are finding their identity in their possessions - in a sense, their stuff owns them. So commercials have changed in response to the cultural shift. We're not just buying products anymore. We're buying an image, and hoping that that image can transfer in some way to ourselves.

synapticflame, i couldn't agree more. I have several friends in school for marketing and advertising, and we argue regularly over the ethical base for what they learn. Not only do the advertisements not have anything to do with the products anymore, the Advertisers KNOW it. A large part of advertisement today centers around psychological appeal, and basic Ericksonian hypnosis and 'neuro-linguistic programming' are staple study for those entering the field. I find many commercials insulting in their shameless attempts to override my ability to think for myself with loops of trash; in particular the recent campaign ads that had differnent people finishing each others sentences and repeating the same short phrases REALLY bothered me. Since, i've seen the same method used by companies. These commercials aren't meant to prove anything to us, or convince us of anything... they are meant to creep inside our heads and override our own opinions with loops of thoughts that arent ours. It is literally brainwash, and advertisers expect us to be too busy and/or stupid to notice.

If you havent noticed, all their marketing works and you guys are all examples of their strategies working! by remembering the stupid commercials, you remember the brand, and thats the main idea of the commercials: get their brand name to be in your subconscious. Whether negative or positive- their name is remembered by you.

When I see an advertisement, I ask myself what I learned about the product, and if I wanted the product before I saw the ad. If these answers aren't both yes, I do my best to disregard and forget the ad. I especially avoid telling people about ads... I am not going to do someone elses' marketing for them for free!!!

But you're right.... these ads do have an unfortunate success rate, what with all the psychology and stuff.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!! :(:(:):(

The two spies are a classic. And some people use to love watching them. I don't lol. I agree the AOL commerical are cheesy and retarded. They don't give you anything to laugh about or think. Its like a blonde talking to you.

Of course, their only intentions are to tick off the painstricken consumer, right? I don't watch too much TV, but I see where you're coming from. Super Bowl Sunday no longer has that commercial flair, that unusual tendency to draw several million Americans to the TV set for the sole sake of feasting on advertisements. And that's just one day of 365! Commercials are the devil, and sometimes I even feel that I get more advertisements than I do actual programming! *sigh* TiVo is so tempting...heh

Ha! God bless Replay T.V. All I have to do is record the show and watch it at any time. When the commercial comes on...zap 30 second skip with over skip compensating. ;) However, lately I have been having to watch some live commercials with the purchase of our HDTV. The replay can only record up to 480i...not quite the same quality I can get from a live HD broadcast. Anyways, I pity the torture you all go through having to watch marketer's ideas on how to sell you junk.
