The Cost Of Computer-related Stuff Today other crap that makes PCs suck today

Recommended Posts

Just a note, I know the cost of most things are far less expensive than they were 50 years ago. Such as HDDs, RAM, etc. where the price actually dropped 1000s of percents. anyways...

Imagine a time when the newest and best game for the PC came out and it was being reviewed as the best game of all time. Every site and every reviewer gave it 10/10 and better. high praise for everything about it. The graphics were intense, the storyline was awesome, the theme was unqiue... everything about it was awesome and it was "the must game to have this year!" Problem is, it was beyond the hardware available. The only thing that could run it, even at medium settings, was a $3200 upgrade from your current system (which, hypothetically, would be the high end from only 3 months ago). Dual video card, sporting dual core GPUs, a dual core processor running at speeds that would burn down your house without vapochill, HDDs that sound like a ferrari peeling out, and RAM with a PC-6xxx number with so many zeros that they have to use scientific notation! So the only game you ever wanted would cost you the price of the game plus the hardware needed to play it.

Sure, you could play the games that your current, and certainly high-end, system could play... but hey, what good is playing the same games that are not considered as obsolete as your hardware? Hell, your friend on his Xbox can play the newest games? why? because the consoles are optimized for games and you, in your infiniate wisdom, figure it's better to have a computer to play games than a console. Probally because you can do more on a PC, but mostly because thumbsticks in FPS games suck the largest c#ck. So instead of buying the newest Xbox for $500, you dropped $1600 on your first computer, then another $2000 for next year's upgrade, and now you're looking at a $3200 upgrade JUST TO PLAY THIS ONE GAME!

So you go out and sell your left nut for yet another upgrade. You install all the stuff, half of it doesn't work because the manufacturers are only insterested in getting the best thing out before the nearest competitor, "F*** quality!" they say. "F*** you!" I respond. So a couple RMAs later and a fresh BIOS, driver and overall REVAMP later, you have your brand new, vacuum cleaner-loud system. Vappochill and all, it still roars... not from fans or mechinical parts, but from the superheated cores expanding air in much the same way as lightning. congradualations, you have a f***ing thunderstrom inside your accoustically-sealed case. can you say infinate bass? ba-boom beeyatch! but hey! you got the best system to date! woot for you. So you go out and get the game now, running with your $55 ($5 for tax) to the local WalMart because your system need to run a debug for 24 hours before you can even go online to NEWEGG! Expecting, but of course, for the price to be $50 as are all games when they come out. BUT NO! it's $75 and online shopping later reveils the same! why? because "it's the greatest game of all time!" so you go back home, slice off your left nut thinking "if it's so good, i don't need children. i'll blow the rest of my load when i see this game in action." So you go back, turns out it's up another $5, but hell, you have $50,000 from your balls, so you whip out your wad and act all rich and pay the b*tch at the counter who thinks she's better... yes, working at walmart is better than going to college. but anyways, back to home with your new game in hand. install it, plug it in, "CD KEY IN USE TRY AGAIN LATER!" F*CKING KEYGEN HACKERS!

So hours of your own hacking and asking for your friend's key, you finally get it installed and running. 4 hours later, you beat it in veteran mode. you sit, amazed. you sacrificed your furture children, possibly burnt down the house, sustained massive ear damage from the noise of your super-system and destroyed any chance of being though of having a large package (due to the "gun-to-*BLEEP*" ratio) thansk to the amoutn of money you blew on your upgrade... all for a game... that litterally... sucked the balls right out from under you. So there you are, sitting, alone. weaping. having phantom limb sensations from balls that pied to be itched.

Just then your friend IM's you. *DING!!!!* form your 60000watt 18.5 stereo you "had to get" from an online review. "hey man! did you get the game? I got it on ebay for $30, then used keygen to get the code. sorry, i gues it was yours when you called last night. m'bad. anyways, did you play it? it was okay, but I can't wait for the sequal to come out next month. glad I got the xbox instead of the PC. damn man, you must've spent and arm and a leg to play that game! anyways, ttyl." ... you casually reach over and type "actually, my balls..." after he signed off. and you sit in loathesome silence.

that world would suck to live in huh? it would suck to have a PC in such a world? everyone would be gaming on consoles because noone could afford a PC gamign system. good thing we don't live in that place.... oh wait...

WE F*CKING DO!!!!!

actually I'm not that much into gaming and I can live perfectly well without knowing the exact storyline of "shoot-em-all XIV" ... and I'm kind of scared of the idea of running a webserver on an xbox ... how would you write the config with these controllers anyways?by the way, if you wait some time before getting that game you'll get the game and the hardware much cheaper ... if it's really the best game ever, it won't become bad by the time you can afford it...

Chez, that is why PC games have quality settings (where you can crank down the resolution, effects, anti-aliasing, etc.) for those who can't run the games on "HARDCORE UBER 1337" mode.Besides, most games with quality (meaning a well-planned story, gameplay, etc.) are the kind of games that use optimized graphics engines, instead of jamming the fanciest stuff out there into the game so it looks pretty, but uses four times as much resources as it would have to if a little time was taken on it.

I must admit that this would suck indeed, but of course this is a bit fictive. But when you tell me it's better to have a console for playing games, you're right. When you buy a console, you can play all games that come out for it. And it stays for at least 5 years or something. When you buy the newest computer it's outdated after a year, and after 2 and a half year you can hardly play a new game on it. But you can do more with a computer and of course it has better hardware...so, if you're rich, you can buy a new computer everytime, but the most are not, 'so that's a shame. And then another thing....games are cheap there m8ies..... A game here costs at least 60 euro. And there 50 dollar. And the dollar is worth less then a euro :( It's not fair :'(

probally cheaper hre because the major dveloprs are N. American based. The Final Fantasy and other obviously-created-in-japan games are produced elsewhere, but I think Infinity, EA, Blizzard, Bethesda, etc are all American (coect me i I'm wrong). So the xport cost would be that much more. Or... you coul jut buy online from an Amrican retailer and pay $5 for Royal Air (w/e english airfreight is called).Still though, I'm the kind of guy who cringes at the sight of jaggies on a diagonal line. I need my AA up to at least 4 and my resolution to at least 1280x1024. Just a pet peeve when I have to play a game at Diablo II resolution or with Doom II jaggies. SO every couple months, I'm updating my computr with the latest and greatest. I'm finally done with my base hardware (dual raptors in raid0 for games, 2x 300gig for storage from linux, 80gig for universally-readable muic, 160gig for linux. Opteron 148 OCed to 2.9ghz and dual dual-layer dvd burners). Now I can focus on the video card and RAM exlusively. Still is a btch to upgrade just to play decent game. I may just plurge next month on a BFG 7800GTX 512 @ 650x1750 speeds. :(
