The Story Of Your Website(s)

Recommended Posts

I don't know. It just seemed interesting to know how everyone's site started and ended up. And if you have more then one website, and they all connect to each other, feel free to share!!

My first website was called "Orange Ocean" I had 2000 hits in 4 weeks, but my site went down. Since my host was my internet provider, and my dad wanted to switch internet comapnies, my could-have-been-sucessful-ish site had to go down ;__; It was a pointless site anyways xD a shrine to Shaman King, Kirby and Yuyu Hakusho. Geez, I was so creative XD The layout was Kirby with meta knight, and the backround was orange, obviously. The name "Orange Ocean" came from the name of a level in kirby. I think it was the sixth level in nightmare in dreamland or something like that XD

My second website was going to be a link directory. At the time, the only program I had was paint. I wanted to affiliate with some super experianced website ddirectory....but they rejected me and I was mad. The site was called "Lost for Ever" because...it was a link directory and that pretty much suited the type of site. In the rejection email, it said I had crummy graphics. Crummy graphics, eh? So that's how my graphics site started!

It ties into my third website, a graphics site called Lost for ever. I kept the name cuz i thought it sounded nice. It became a really popluar graphics site, and I kept changing it's url!!! Here are all the URL's Lost for Ever has been:
/legacy
http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
http://thebluekirby.weird.name/
http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
I doubt most of those links work (besides the last one XD)
The name changed from "Lost for ever" to "Anime Sendai" because I thought it sounded too dull. Then anime sendai seemed to anime-much and I wasn't THAT much into anime, so I changed it to "Seigikan" which means justice. I love justice!!!

And that is the story of how my website ended up the way it is now XD How about you?

Great topic! ^_^

Reading through the posts so far made me realize that I've been 'tinkering' with websites for about seven years or so. I'm one of those trial and error people. I would have to say that it all started in 11th and 12th grade when I started work on my high school year book staff. I started as just a general staffer and then my senior year I jumped to Senior Editor (how I got picked for that is still beyond me ^_^ ) Through that process I learned a lot about graphics editing, which led me to want to create my own site. I can honestly say I have no clue what that one was about but it did have cool graphics. Tehe!

At that time I also did a lot of online rpg and eventually started creating webpages for my characters. Did that for about 2-3 years off and on when I had time, ending up with about 15 1-2 page info sites. Learned A LOT through that process about code, java, etc. - great experience. Not sure where most of those are anymore though.

From there I didn't have a lot of time for rpg but I managed to keep up some of my old contacts. Towards the end some of my sites were getting nice, and more important - simple and easy to navigate/understand. One of these contacts asked me to create a site for her character and they wanted it to be similar to one of mine - which is where the next stage started. I have been creating character sites for about 3-4 years now (for free of course), off and on when I have time. It's tons of fun and allows me to experiment with new things and meet some fairly interesting online personalities.

An example of one of the character sites:
https://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/

The individual provided the basic concept, I drew up the template with her info, and then handed it over to her - she wanted to finalize her own images in this case. I'm then available to these folks as needed with site support if something stops working.

As of now, I'm at another stage in my life (one where I actually have money ^_^ ) and am considering finally buying my own doman and getting hosted somewhere. We'll see where that train of thought leads. :P

Great topic !!! Actually i have too a story to tell about my site. My first site was onlinefriends. i made this site as my project in my web-designinig classes. Initially i copied a lot of content from other sites and posted there but finally when my teacher suggest me to built a professionally looking site and told me that i could host it for free then i was surprised. At that time I had only heard that we can host a site by paying hundredd of $$$ but when i saw a web host called Brinkster.com which then offered 30 mb space (now it has closed free hosting) i was suprised. At tha ime i uploaded all my site on brinkster one by one since i had no knowledge of FTP at that particular time. Now the problem was of domain . the sub domain which brinkster provided was to long . then suddenly was lucky enogh to hear of dot.tk which offered .tk domain i quickly signed up there and registered a domian onlinefriends.tk . At that time when i had a full flegde web site i was the first one to have a web site in whole of my school. Most of my friends in school were i either eager to known that how i made the site or were envying of me.But then after 3 months of my site a disaster occured some one hacked my site and pointed the my .tk domian to some xxx site. Here the disater starts.. My email signature was my domain name and many ppl who clicked by url were sent to some xxx site this was the horrible ending of my web site. Then i had to close my that site. but i still have that site on brinkster which i rarlely use.

I had so many websites that I forgot about their history ^_^.But I can tell you one thing.I build my first 'website' at Fortunecity webhost provider why there were the first public-known (at leat to me) free web space providers.I registered and got my 5Mb space with tons of banners flying around and pop-up jumping on your screen, but I was happy.I managed to successfuly buid my first so-called website.Delighted I was, I decided to get rich one day (and I still hope I'll make cash with IT) and so I start selling my homemade software ^_^, omg those time, but ofcourse no-one bought anything, especially because no-one actually visited my website ^_^.What did I know, I thought if I make a homepage people will start coming but it wasn't like that at all. Then I discovered search engine submission and so I submitted my personal homepage and still no results. Then the new webhost peovider came to market, it was called Geocities (ahh, do you remember? :P), I got 10Mb and I decided to make a new website, this time it was a computer progammers community.Still nobody came to my website and I was so sad and didn't know what was I doing wrong. Now, years and years after I know what's it all about and I personaly like blogs more then websites, for personal use.I would use a website only when doing e-bussiness of a sort, blogs are just more cute :D.Not much of a story, but that was my beginning.

Well my first website was offline. I created it using a free trial of webpagemaker. It was all right but I'd tried to cram every javascript application you could into one page so the final page size ended up being about 50kb of HTML.

It was called CMATCME (hence my username) and the name has stuck. It was called this because at the time I though it sounded nice and it fitted in with my site's initial url (C:\Mat C.me).

My next site was hosted online with my isp. It was pretty crap and it still exists click here. Again it was pretty much of a stick-every-script-you-can-in-one-place type site and I probably created it because I was bored.

So after that I move hosts because of the big banner and my url changes and I begin to code html for myself. When I did this I found that I could do much more things, it saved me a few ??? and it did help me code php later on.

Each one has a slighly different design:

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

http://lygo.com/ly/sitemissing.html (first php site)

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (move to asp)

http://www.directdomains.com/profile/ugtech.net?domain=ugtech.net&utm_source=ugtech.net&utm_medium=click (back to php - free hosting service closed down - site deleted)

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (first time attempting mySql)

So now I am including mysql and thinking more of what the site looks like rather than how many scripts I use.

That's my story ^_^

Edit: For some reason the links didn't work. Fixed.

The first website I ever built was a personal, blog-style site (before blog had even been coined as a term) which I kept going for 2-3 years. In between then and now I've built or worked on quite a few different sites but haven't gotten around to doing another personal site for myself.

^_^ This topic is quite interesting, I have to say... and I just have a little something to say about my site... :D

When I was 6, I made my first site ever... it was a dedication to Harry Potter, and as you might know, 6 year olds don't exactly make good sites. :P As you can guess, I was the only kid who ever did such a thing in my school... and in fact... I still was, until some jealous classmates decided to do the same... ^_^

I graduated from that, and ended up making a huge site using HTML about my favorite game, Dragon Warrior at 10 years old. I ended up getting "inspired" by a huge DW site, so I made my own. I ended up getting a lot of hits, and stuff, so I overloaded my site with things like the thing that follows the cursor, counters, polls, flash, and O_o OMG, you get the idea... As I finally saw the error of my ways, due to visiting my site (which was a pain, since I'm on dial-up).

I decided to make a simpler and calmer version of the spin-off of DW which was Dragon Warrior Monsters. It didn't last long, but I loved the simpler designs! I disappeared from the site making world for a year, as I was too busy playing games, and I often lost interest in my site because my site is usually about one topic that I get sick of.

Therefore, I decided to make a site that changes topics with my interest! It contained info about my current interests, and if I get sick of something, I change it to a different topic! Of course, sites without stable topics don't last long. I hated it when I saw that no one like to visit. Then, I suddenly entered the manga scanlation world...

I started editing manga, and I loved it! I saw some sites that host manga, and I decided, why shouldn't I do the same? I asked around here, and it seemed that it was okay to host unlicensed manga. Manga turned out to be my interest that will last for so long. It's such a huge genre, that if I lose interest in one series, I can always try some out, and it's still within the boundaries of manga. I found my calling. :D I changed my kiddy layout into something simple that does the job. (Simpler is always better.) I told my dad the advantages of having a TLD, and since I found a cheap one, he agreed to pay for my domain. And I ended up with the name "Strawberry Mint" which refers to my two favorite colors, Pink and Green. *I know, Strawberry isn't usually pink, but... ^_^ * Plus, I love Mint, and anything else that's Strawberry flavored. It was so cute, it stuck...

Now I'm getting a steady amount of hits, despite my site being under construction and all, but I'm gonna stick to it for a looong time! Go manga!

Ha~ Everyone's sites are so interesting XDOh, I forgot to leave out a little weird story about my site...the only program I had back then was Paint. so all my graphics were done with paint but i have to admit, they didn't look that bad for such a program...Anyways, the story of the name "Anime Sendai" wasn't very clearly explained. I changed it to that because I expected my site to be an anime information site. But...buu...too much work. I kept the name anime sendai for a while, but seigikan sounded more cool. Seigi by itself means justice. I wanted my site to be called seigi, but someone already took the domain in all extentions =/ so i went for seigikan which means sense of justice. Close enough XD why is justice my favorite word? Eh...long story...

My site has a very short story compared to your guyses. I originally had a Warcraft 2 site on freewebs.com but the community for that game died about mid 2k4. I've done some game programming, artwork, comics and videos anf that's what my site is for. But it's pretty uch turning into a video site as that's all I'm currently working on (and plan to be working on). I might post up some of my stick man comics once I get cpanel working again (I think it's the ISP). Simple layout, and I doubt it will ever change (well I mean become a more complicated graphic design). It's about the content (of which there is currently very little of, mainly cuz I start stuff and don't finish, but I gotta a lot of good projects in line and in progress), not the presenatation.

My website. Ah, those hreat days of starting out. Those days are over now. Although I don't know PHP or MySql, I do know javascript, html, css, and a little bit of everything else. I find PHP very hard to grasp, I need to head to a tutorial. Anyway, my websites started when I, a nature nut, and still am, decided a good website was in order. I started with webspawner. Thats right, I started with a simple one page long and simple website. From there, I went to 1 asp host, but didn't know where to start because I knew nothing about how you are suppose to have a index.html file! I still have all these sites by the way. I settled with blogger and used a blog for almost 6 months to get my ideas through. I had about 30 hits a week, with a steady stream of comments working in each day. But being religious, I decided to start a religious blog, getting even more hits in I was introduced to the world of debating. I was able to actually spread the gospel be debating, and people watching learned of my beliefs. The religious website still running was a great hit. And although I am not active in promoting it anymore, I can choose to at anytime. But moving on, as I spread the gospel more, I needed a site to refer to, I went to lycos, but didn't like its simple design and switched to freewebs instead, where I gained a huge amount of knowledge in html. I built a webpage from scratch. I needed even more room to grow though, and went to Liquid H, which featured a 500mb storage and 10Gb band. But the site crashed andleft me stranded, so I decided a realiable host was in order. I found Xisto, and although I wasn't going to join, *GASP!* I finally did and now have begun slowly switching all pages over. And that folks, is the story of my websites. Great topic, very interesting, thanks for making it! ^_^

Hey,My website started here...hosted by Xisto at around Christmas last year.I wanted to make it something like my (or our) world. So just make some spaces to write anything we want such as experiences of being an international student in the UK. But most of the stuff in my website is not in English. We intended to write some stories in English though...but not yet.http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

I first started building websites back in like 1997. I started on angelfire.com and built my own free webhosted websites. They werent very good as i can remember, in fact they were the crappiest crap ever. In about 2001 I moved out to New Hampshire after High School, and out there I built a website called globalsitedesign.net where I tried starting a web design business. It didnt work out to well so I canned that project and got into the porn business. I opened up pornoconnection.com when I was 18, and played around with porn for awhile. I made some money at it, but it wasnt enough to keep staring at porn every day. So I quit that. Then in 2002 I got the mental illness schizophrenia, and basically went crazy, and ended up in a mental hospital a couple of times. I took a two year break from computers, and did not even touch a computer for the longest time. Then I moved to Colorado in 2004 and bought a computer from my brother. A 200mhz for $40. I started designing websites again and coincidentally got the idea to open up a schizophrenia website community for the mentally ill. It's called SchizoFarm. I have 3 clients so far with my web design business, and Im starting to learn php. Can u believe I built this website with a 200mhz computer? Here is my website:schizofarm.trap17.comIt has 57 members so far and is growing bigger every day.Xad

i just wanna say that building the site gain more hard and sad than pleasure.at the college life i started to know and connecting computer,i even know the first time i register a free email from the web,how excite feeling full of my body and brain.i used windows office, there was a compnent "word",by which i created the first webpage of mine.i was so happy with that, copied it to floopy disk, uploaded to the free webhost.pretty good!then i got to know the frontpage, this was a professional programme.but by i'm learning more and more html code i used notepad to modify the works of others from the web,it became my site.that's easy.2001 summer to 2002 summer is my last term on the college.yes,2 years.my college moved to the H university.the H university is so large, the library of it even 10 times than our college library.i was feeling good on the internet and computer knowledge.(there were some electronic reading room on it,which using for internet service.)(2001补充)at my beginning time with internet,i just thought the domain of "http://www.yourdomain.com/ free to sign.but it's not like that,i tried the big effort but got nothing.later i knew i could use redirect subdomain.after that i registered so much subdomains.the shortest subdomain i got is "xx.xx.to"the school official web site had the service of 20mb free webhost, which had a long url,it support asp,but i'm not use asp script any more.i rememered that time i was interested on hacking programme and the online music,so i built a site named "west down".using the lycos webhost, the second bak site located on my school personal homepage host.everday i thought about my site,if the news should renew?if added this programme or this rm music on,which template i would use.this was all the minds on my thoughts.months later the lycos added ads on my index page.when i wanna switched to another host,i forgot the password of it and no method to reset it or take it back.my feelings got hurt by it.the whole spring and summer of 2002,i even gave up building site, changed to playing computer games,i played delta force 1 ,then delta force 3,counter strike from version beta to version 1.3 stable,half-life,i also didn't went to library normally,i played, wasting money, sleep, eat.no one meaningful things left.mid-summer i graduated.i was still loving computer, loving the internet.what's the different is at school i had many pals playing the game together, but now only myself.so the time i playing game became less.i got more time for web.in 2003,i built a site about movies and novels.it was using the japan server.support ftpspeed is nice, using a subdomain "xx.xx.to",a free cgi board.because of the works i had to spare time for the site.on the 2004 year,i started to know and learn "php",i knew some webhost support the php & mysql database, which would used for forum, I searched for the host viewing lots of sites, changing many host.and i think Xisto is the longest host i am ever used.i just install the php script like phpwind, ipb, phpbb and so on.then blog becam popular,i know more and more about open source, programming enginee.i just got know very nice site like "opensourcecms.com","sourceforge.net","oswd.org".i think i will be better morrow, but my fate will going bad.
