Here is the latest from Atem, one of the devs from GSC. He answered 10 questions only, here are 2 of them;

1) You know we all have been waiting for a response on this question: can you comment on the release date?
A: No. The release date will not be announced until we are completely sure in its completeness/stability. The only answer is SOON.

2) Can you tell us what is causing the delay? How complete in the game
A: We started STALKER development as ordinary FPS, but during the development process we've integrated too mach new features (some of them are unique), so we need more time to make everything work properly. As for the second question: Debugging, balancing - main things now.
- Q: So level design is done?
A: Yes.
