  1. UPDATE:We are currently devising a plan to incorporate The Freelancers Union. The activity this idea has produced proves this as a marketable concept and needs to be legally established for several reasons in order to house professional freelance designers. With that said I will not be as active online until further noticeAs always you are always welcome to join the TFU Google groups page until we are fully legal and operational. We currently have 21 members and are ready and willing to collaborate. **Note - Please realize that the network that is being constructed for experienced professionals. Before collaborating with anyone be sure you are sure that you are willing to commit yourself to the given project requested for collaboration.

  2. I am very proud to mention that the Freelancers' Union has grown to 17. That's 17 contributers/team members/designers/writers/programmers/and so on! Were in it to help each other and you! I just talked to a colleague of mine and we are stirring up some money making ideas.I am currently talking to a sale lead I have and if we come to an agreement I will donate the PAID project to TFU. All contributers of this project will split the profits.I'm a bit excited...3 new members in 2 days. Whoo hoo! I got to get back to work now...so till next time. Ciao.Tim

  3. I think you could use a more professional design, espicially if it is paid work. I'd suggest a navigation bar under the main banner. A better background from what i'm currently seeing would look better as well.

Sorry, there was so much testing and moving going on that site that what you guys were looking at was very out dated.

The Wordpress theme has been completed.

  4. Update:Me and some of the members have teamed up to start our first TFU project! In this exercise we will be identifying what issues are to be faced when collaborating remotely with an international team (whew... fancy vocab). If you are interested in joining in the project there is a link in my signature that goes to the TFU google groups pageYou are always welcomed to join The Freelancers Union. If you don't know who we are there is a short description in my signature. We are looking forward to working with you!

  5. Sorry all,
I've been tending to a client for the past couple of weeks now and have been unavailable for a bit but hopefully I will be back online soon.

My client. tell me what you guys think of the site? At the moment only the homepage is complete, I am waiting on feedback before I do everything else.

I think this was the weakest layout that I have ever produced haha. It is somewhat effective however the post is one of the last things visible! Unfortunately this may be it, the budget is too small for me too live off of and and am forced to do what I need to do... Move on.

  6. It is OK to be worried about an industry that is changing constantly with new technology emerging everyday but don't forgot that you do not have to know everything to succeed in the industry. If you are highly skilled in one area that should be enough for you to get a job. Some jobs will require you to know more than one area if you are working on a project by your self but in most cases with a team based project tasks are allocated to the right people.
I have worked in a team of so called programmers and to be honest none of them have any design skills at all. They will require a expert designer if they wish to have a working program that looks good. There are so many people who want to jump on the band wagon and work in the IT area be it management, desgin or programming side but if you are not good at what you do then you will probably not get as many jobs as talented people.

Sure there are premade solutions for most common things like joomla, wordpress or what ever but there is always going to be a demand for customized sites that use these pre-made CMS or one that is written from scratch from the start. This is where people with the right skills come in so if you are good then you will need to not worry. For example the past few days I have been customizing a osCommerce website for a friend. He got the initial job but has no clue on how to code in PHP so he gets me to do it. I have never used osCommerce before so it was new to me but because I knew enough about PHP I was able to do all of the task he required.

There are jobs out there for the right people you just have to go out and find it. It is not going to come to you if you aren't good at what you do then work on that. Once you have proven you can deliver solutions then I'm sure the jobs will just keep rolling in. Then you can charge as much as you like.

Sonesay has said it all. I think knowing the right code is important but creativity is key. It's the only thing that makes the industry appealing and thats what will put you in the front. That is usually the case with any industry though. lol.

Focus on the idea, and use that as your vehicle. You will learn what you need on the way. That is the FUTURE.

  7. I recently acquired a client from a non-profit organization and they are requesting a wordpress site. Tomorrow I will planning to convert the site into wordpress. I got the draft up here.

Your feedback and suggestions are encouraged, I am aiming to launch this thing at the end of the month.

Here is the current site - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

Here is MY DRAFT - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/index.html

I am not happy with the header part of the site but the client likes it. go figure.

  8. Is there a concept to follow for creating the TFU logo?

Why did you choose that design Tim?

    I had 3 ideas:

The original was a Guild-like Coat of Arms. I did a bit of research on what a guild is and I actually think it is somewhat fitting to TFU, however creation of a coat of arms is actually quite a task that requires a defined organization. I still definitely want to do this in the short future.

Then, I decided to try an acronym...FU. I like how it's controversial due to it's secondary acronymic meaning. It will really stand out and catch one's eye however, the con to it is of course some people will be offended by it. I was playing with the fonts on my PC to find something attractive but nothing really stood out.

This is the idea that became. I was having some trouble creating a logo for TFU so I gave in to my greedy pleasure and drew what I wanted  . I love drawing and as a child I surfed A LOT. In school I used to draw abstract looking waves on my assignments and what not. If you look closely you can see a curl inside the logo that slightly resembles a wave. So that is basically what it is... sorry, I agree that there should be some meaning to it, but there isn't anything that directly relates to TFU :XD: . But then again as it entails a part of the founder's history it may be of somewhat tangeable...

  9. Nice work Kimochitim, i particularly like the contrast between negative and positive space of the graphic. Just a quick point if i may, i wouldn't mind seeing a variation where the font is black, sized a couple/few points higher and a sans serif font.

    For example -

    The Freelancers

    Union

    or

    The Freelancers

    Union

But its all good either way, i'll hide back in my hole now.

I'll shoot you the PSD tomorrow. Please feel free to tweak it to how you see fit. I wanted to share it with some of you guys earlier, however it needs to be copyright protected before I send it to anyone. It's my only proof of ownership.

  10. Here is my submission...post-80675-1243321481_thumb.pngVector image simple, scalable and still visually appealing in black and white. It's unique and simple which makes it memorable. However I can't see how it ties in with TFU (In the design world it doesn't necessarily need to but, I would like it to have that kind of depth. If you can see it it says FU. Many people may think it's may be bad for biz due to the alternative meaning F*ck You. I think it could be something good. The letters FU together really catches the eye, however I may design of an alternative, more conservative logo as well.

  11. Recently, members from Xisto have formed a growing group of freelancers to establish a relationship for mutual benefit. We are calling ourselves The Freelancers' Union. TFU's objective is to network each others skills to create products that we previously were unable to do. You can learn more about The Freelancer's Union by visiting the Trap 17 FTU topic and our google groups page.

    The Freelancer's Union Logo Contest.
We are currently accepting entries for our logo.
    Rules:

    • You can post it here on Xisto but be sure to save the PSD file. It will be needed if your logo is chosen.
    • It must be scale-able, and printable (CMYK mode).
Your design could be on a building or on a letterhead; keep this in mind. Vector images are always the best way to go when designing a logo.
All we ask is that you do read up on us before designing and have fun!

The client wants you to do it all, unfortunately they don't know how much that really is. We are creating a network of freelancers who are willing to share their skills with others in order to satisfy the ever demanding client and strive to get the clients that were once unattainable.

The Freelancers' Union aims to connect the Designer, Developer, Photographer, Writer, Marketer, Editor, etc... to form a team whether it be for a specific project or permanently. Face it, you can't do it all, but maybe we can help. We are the Freelancers' Union and we build teams for mutual benefit and money.
