It is advised to read the books in order, since it gets a bit confusing if you read them out of order.The movie has been being worked on for a LONG time. It had just been at the beginnings of picking a cast when Douglas Adams died, and it was put on hold for quite a while after that. For a while there was talk that it was not ever going to be made into a movie.
