    Darn Chainletter

Yep, I get a good number of spam emails a day too...around 30 on average. It happens to just about everyone who's active in different places of the web, especially if you've signed up for any "free" offers at one point or another. Almost all spam emails give you the option to "opt out" and not recieve anything else from them, but lots of times I've noticed the emails never stop coming, or even worse, they sign you up for MORE spam. It's an awful awful place in the email world, you just have to learn to live with it, and find out ways to get around it.Personally I'd suggest switching from yahoo over to gmail. Gmail generally has a really good reputation for blocking spam email, and it's members are less likely to be spammers themselves. I'm sure this is largely in part of the invite system Gmail uses - you can only join if you get an invitation from a current Gmail member. BUT that's really no problem for normal people, because there are so many people using Gmail nowadays, and most people have all 50 of their invites unused [which get replenished every month, I think].If you want, I can send you one of my invites.
  2. Oh, I thought we still had ads on the forums...I have pretty much every ad ever blocked on my home computer, so I didn't notice.Part of the plan for this was that it would [dramatically?] increase forum activity, and hence ad revenue...but I guess that won't quite work now.Hm...I'd assume increased forum activity would generate some sort of revenue...T17 has to sustain itself somehow...but if there are no ads, then...how? o_O[EDIT: If need be, we could simply use the credits from raffle ticket purchases as the prize. Not as lucrative, obviously, but potentially very rewarding. I'm sure quite a few members with extra credits would still be entering.][EDIT 2: Maybe Xisto - Web Hosting is single-handedly supporting itself and T17 [and possibly AH?]]
  3. Good point, but how many people are active posters on both site? And how many of those people want this offer? Doubt there's many of them. I'm sure there's a few though, so it's a good question. But about the joke about the uber computer thing...maybe we could have a credit raffle or something? 10 or more credits for a ticket, and maybe have a set number of tickets a person may buy [if more than one, so nobody can overpower the raffle by much], then the winner after a week or a month or something gets a prize...maybe not an uber computer, but computer parts maybe, or hosting-related things, or something along those lines. Even better would be a selection of equally-priced items. I'm sure it would encourage at least a small boost in posting, if not a huge amount. Maybe OpaQue could offer some of his Indian food! Hopefully it's possible for OpaQue to code something like that. I think it shouldn't be too hard... I know I'd be a regular raffler, for sure! To summarize, plus addons: Raffle system -largely automated, possibly with a form for buying tickets in the hosting centre -weekly and/or monthly and/or yearly drawings -some sort of winner/deadline announcement feature, maybe near the shoutbox or in the credits box on the forum index, or even in the hosting centre. --possible subscription feature to have announcements and/or deadlines sent to your inbox/email address -10+ credits per ticket -maximum number of credits allowed per drawing -prizes dependent on entry time period [weekly would be worth less than monthly] -prizes may include computers, computer parts, hosting-related things, etc. [things that almost anyone on the forum could enjoy] -there may be a selection of prizes of equal value, as not everyone may like one particular prize -some sort of quick info page or topic listing all the rules, guidelines, benefits, current deadlines/rewards, past winners, etc. Possible pros: -increase in posting on T17 [possibly enormous amounts], and the benefits thereof for the members and the company -another way to be rewarded on T17, which creates a better webhost overall Possible cons: -spamming? What do the rest of you think? [i was going to post this as a reply to the Free Domain Name topic, but I think it's worth a topic of it's own.]
  4. Nevermind. It's over, for good. I'm not gonna bother explaining. Thanks for the advice, people. Topic Closed.
  5. Very, very nice. A great song, but even better is the meaning behind it. Thanks, GAH.
  6. By the way, this is no joke, people. I applied and got my domain transfer approved within hours. Just keep making good, quality posts, and you can get there too! <3
  7. My view on this is that art is only art if you consider it to be art. For example, person A thought it was just trash, and threw it away. According to him, it's not art. That line of thinking eliminates them as being "responsible" for what other people see as "art". But on the other side of that coin, Person B also is not the creator of that "art", as they simply took it from the trash and entered it into a contest. By nature, this makes person B no more than a publisher. So who is responsible for creating this piece of art? Technically Person A is, because he's the person who made it be, but in reality, the piece of art has only been created by the people who see it as art, because if they didn't, it would still be trash. Interesting concept. [i agree with shadowx on one thing, it's just a crumpled piece of paper. I think art is considered art when only you, or very few other people, can produce the same thing. Anyone can crumple a paper.]
  8. Frankly, I don't really care if she's your type or not...I'd go to the movies anyway. Could potentially be better than you think, and if not, hey, you get to see a movie and kill some time.Works for me.[EDIT: And it seems like the girl really wanted your number, which is kind of a big deal [girls aren't usually the ones to ask for numbers, especially at someplace like a restaurant], so why not make her happy? If you don't like her, you don't have to see her for more than 2 hours or so, and if you do, she already seems to like you quite a bit, so that's a plus.]
  9. Ultimatum. And thank you for your input, tuddy. You have some really good points there.I'm wondering what you mean by "sitting somewhere quiet and not going to be left stranded"...do you mean literally, or figuratively?
  10. You'd be surprised how much money adsense gives. It has a lot of restrictions and jumping through hoops nowadays, but it generates money fairly quickly. Not too long ago I put an adsense ad on my website to help out my CS clan [haha, kind of ironic in this topic] and the very first day it made something like 3 bucks off of 4 clicks. If your website has say, a hundred people coming to it per day, and maybe only 10 of them click an ad, that's still around 7-8 dollars if your ads pay as much as mine did. Sure, that's minimum wage if you were to be working a job, but it's money you're making without having to do ANY work whatsoever. It's just a little stream of income for 0 effort on your part. It's really helpful for things like T17, because we hosted members can generate just enough money to pay for hosting through Xisto - Web Hosting, which benefits us and the community.I'm not sure how much the counter-strike ads are clicked on/followed through, but I do know CS servers cost a lot to run [usually from 60-120 USD a month, depending on quality and location] so if you can get a few people to do it, you'll probably be making nice money there too.
  11. I do believe it's a thing of instinct. A lot of times I've noticed that I didn't need to lie in a certain situation, but I did anyway, simply out of impulse. It's just the first thing people think to do when they believe it may benefit/keep their reputation, honor, that kinda thing. In retrospect though, you can see how that is a catch 22, since lying is dishonorable by nature.People lie, it happens. Some people do it more than others, but I think most people get past it over time. You just end up realizing that lying doesn't really do much anymore, and that telling the truth makes things a lot easier for everyone.
  12. Yup. Talking to people at your school or potential schools you might want to go to is the best bet for the info you're looking for.Make sure you ask about financial aid and credit requirements. Going to school to be a network admin is no fun if you can't pay for it or have to take a million unrelated courses.
  13. So...anything citrus-y....maybe soda...what else has a sour taste?Ooh, it would be good for body shots! Slice of lime, pinch of salt...
  14. Haha, that's a good one. It's true too. Every lie I tell is for a good and honorable reason.
  15. so...did you end up shipping it anywhere? or is it just dead?
  16. Well, I meant "maybe it's still an option" as in the relationship in general....the on and off business is out of the question.
  17. With this sorry hunkajunk computer, I usually:Check EmailRead ForumsTalk to friends on AIM/MSNDownload movies/tv showsListen to musicDesign stuffI used to want to program, until I found out it's one of the most boring things on the planet.
  18. Good points and duly noted, Jim.I've really been considering just dropping it, and discussed that with her. I think we both want it to work, but she's just not ready. I wanted to wait a little while longer to see if anything would change, but it doesn't look like anything has/will for the time being.Maybe it's still an option later on? Or maybe I should just find someone else... I'm not sure.
  19. lol, no, no, trust me. I have no plans of a family/children/even marriage for years to come. We just have a nice relationship going, nothing too serious.
  20. Oh, no, she realizes it. We've been talking about it for a few weeks now.And I'd love to hang out with her, but I've been working like crazy, and she's really sick right now [wouldn't let me see her yesterday because of it.]
  21. Sounds like a good offer. This will benefit our members by having even better rewards for their contributions, and it'll help out T17 by encouraging more posting, and members are likely to stick around if they have both domain and hosting with us. Great idea, OpaQue. <3[i'll be one of the ones applying for this. I don't really need a new domain, but I'd like to be able to transfer mine over here. The place I currently have my domain at is a very unreliable/shady company.]
  22. Are you talking about buying the parts for a custom computer, or finding tutorials on how to put it together, or reviews on which parts are better, or what? If you're buying parts, check out http://www.newegg.com/. They have a huge selection, very cheap prices, and good customer service. Also, all of their products have customer ratings so you can see which ones are good quality.
  23. Topic approved, but please read the rules before posting. Tutorials need to be approved by a staff member before they're visible to normal members, so please don't keep reposting if it doesn't show up right away.
  24. Tralalalala, hello everyone.So....I never thought I would be one of those guys in an on-again off-again relationship and such, but apparently I am. Basically my sometimes girlfriend can't decide if she wants to be with me or not... she goes to a college about 20 minutes away, and her dorm mates are jealous or something and tell her that she shouldn't be with me...and her ex-boyfriend works at the same store as she does, so she has to see him every day, and still has feelings for him, I s'pose. I also have my own issues because I don't have a car and I work 6 days a week for 6-8 hours, and she works and goes to school, so I can't always go see her, and I just got a new job because I didn't really have money to pay for things with her...Basically she just can't decide on things. She knows that I'm trying my best to make her happy, and she's trying to get over her friends and ex...but I dunno, it just seems like she's procrastinating on actually doing it. Or something like that.Anyway, does anyone have ideas/suggestions/input/comments?
  25. The Windows XP CD is your friend. You can put that in and start going through the steps of installing windows, but before you actually install or format anything, there should be an option to repair Windows' system files. If that doesn't work, try the option in the boot menu for "last known working settings" or whatever.Other than that, I dunno...recently my mom's computer wouldn't even boot windows... I had to download/use BartPE [it's kinda like a modular Windows you can boot from a CD] to get in and back up her files to CDs and then reformat the hard drive and reinstall winxp...that was a PAIN. =/
