  1. I wouldn't bother attempting an MMO game. Everyone and their grandmother wants to jump that bandwagon and very very few make it. 99% of all Indie MMO games fail miserably. What you need to do is learn how to code single player games well then move on to network code things like sockets, client/server models etc. After you get a game up where multiple people can connect to then and only then should you delve deeper into the mmo rabbit hole. C++ with openGL or DirectX are definitely the best tools to use and learn although Java is a lot easier to learn and much more suited towards the internet.
  2. Are there many applications out there that are multithreaded to make duel+ processors useful? I've heard that with duel processors single processes are actually much slower than on a faster single cpu due to those small fractions of a second lost when the two processors communicate with eachother but of course are much faster when multiple cpu cycle crunching processes or multithreaded applications are running. I guess my question is, are duel+ processors of much use this point in time and do you think multi-threaded software has a future?

    Boundlessplanet

Just for a head's up, this game went gold a little while ago and costs money to play now I'm pretty sure. If I had to rate it, I'd give it a 7. It's graphics aren't that great and the gameplay does get repetitive sometimes but overall it has a lot of solid entertainment value.
  4. I wouldn't compare World of Warcraft to Guild Wars at all. They are both based off of two completely different concepts. World of Warcraft is much more story driven and focuses a lot on Player vs Environment stuff whereas Guild Wars is much faster paced and is based much more off of Player vs Player, Guild vs Guild concepts. Item's matter in both but much more in World of Warcraft. Guild Wars focuses more on what you do once you reach the level cap not so much as getting there like World of Warcraft. There really are a ton of differences and it really depends on what type of gameplay you like.
  5. I personally love those classic text based classic adventure games like Zork. I guess that is kind of a hybrid RPG/adventure game but it's still a lot of fun and involves strange plot twists and a weird database of keywords and places to search. I've heard a lot of good things about the Monkey Island series and Grim Fandengo but I haven't ever managed to snag copies of them for myself
  6. I personally don't see how anyone can't like tetris. It's like the all time most addicting game ever and yet it's soooo good that even with its simple outdated 2d graphics it sells millions of copies every year in a whole bunch of different forms. It works really well on all platforms, right now I really like the version of tetris on my cell phone, passes the time real well.
  7. I think the only thing that bugs me about source is the look of some of the guns. I much prefer the classic look and feel of the 1.6 guns to the source stuff although I said the same thing when 1.6 and steam first came out so I'm sure I'll get over it. If lag's an issue I just play 1.6 anyway but I guess it's hard to make any real preference over the other.
  8. When I want a couple of rounds for a quick bloody match, I play fy_iceworld. For a normal map though, I like the classics, de_Dust and de_Dust2. Deathmatch stuff makes any map fast and fun though.
  9. Many mods for games have left behind a legacy but very few of them ever last for more than a few years, it's always sad to find out that no one plays your favorite mod. At least there's still some mods that have stood the test of time though.
  10. Yeah someone's probably just messed with the code of a ROM, it's really common and that's why there are a ton of Super Mario Bros clones everywhere. It'd be nice if people put their energies into something new that was just as addictive

    Stay Tooned!

Stay Tooned! was an awesome game to play. It had tons of cartoon humor and funny clones of games like mortal kombat involving special moves like atomic wedgies and hammer smashing. I know there's still some versions of it out there but I think it's hard to have it work with modern day operating systems which is a real drag, it'd be fun to play it again. Anyone else heard of it?
  12. There could be some rugby video games in like New Zealand or maybe parts of Europe perhaps? I play Rugby myself and I do wonder if anyone in the sports games business (namely EA) would ever consider mass marketing a Rugby game. It would be difficult to implement any rugby game though since it's not quite as easy to control as say a football game, there are important roles that wouldn't be able to be played by the computer and how would you ever decide who won a scrum? As cool as a rugby game would be I don't see it probable for one to ever come out :S
  13. I don't think you can even compare Diablo II to Runescape. Diablo II is a hack n slash rpg game hell bent on constant action and grinding. Runescape is a real time but turn based mmorpg that plays much slower but involves a little more thinking (at least in the wilderness). There's no way you can say that Runescape has more items than Diablo II because Diablo II has a random item generator, technically there are near infinite amounts of items you can get a hold of in Diablo II whereas with runescape, everything is set in stone but they have gotten better with that within the last couple of years.
  14. The Simpson's arcade game is definitely a classic. I'm still amazed that I've seen two of them recently, once at an arcade and another at a pizza join not too far away. I agree that it was one of the best all time multiplayer arcade games out there which makes me wonder how a tv licensed arcade game ever came to be so good as many of us know, those rarely ever workout well. I didn't try the link to the game but I think it would ruin it to play it on the computer, most arcade games lose their apeal when they aren't played in well... arcade cabinets. It's cool that there are still some arcade enthusiasts out there though.
  15. Google has been the leading search engine for many years now, it makes me wonder how one out of what seems like a million different search engines could stand out so much to the point where very few of us would consider using something else. What I am curious about, is what search engines did people use before the invasion of Google? I remember using a site called Metacrawler and that it wasn't the most effective thing ever for what I was looking for, but it worked nonetheless. I remember using yahoo too but again, it wasn't that refined back then either. Post what search engines you used before Google if such a time in your life existed This will be interesting...
