It doesn't have to be that way. Install something like XAMPP on Windows and you can run PHP under Apache and ASP under IIS. You have to stop and start each server each time you swap from one to another, but other than that they work just fine on the same machine.

Strong passwords are your first step in securing your systems. If a password can be easily guessed or compromised using a simple dictionary attack, your systems will be vulnerable to hackers, worms, Trojans, and viruses.
Trojan, virus, and worm authors have had great success attacking systems with weak and/or default passwords. Take IRC/Flood Trojan for example. McAfee’s virus profile states that IRC/Flood has over 120 variants and has infected over 60,000 machines in the last 30 days. IRC/Flood succeeds by checking for 22 different different easy to guess admin passwords (variants vary). Unfortunately, there are a lot more where IRC/Flood came from, W32/Tzet.worm, W32/Random.worm, and W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen are in the wild just to name three.

Hackers also have no problem compromising systems with weak passwords. Programs like L0pthCrack for example make the process simple and efficient. Creating a password-cracking dictionary is not even a challenge. Type the words "Creating Password Cracking Dictionaries", without the quotes, in to your favorite search engine. A comprehensive dictionary can be downloaded or created from scratch in short order.

Below is a list of commonly used weak passwords that should NEVER be used. If any of these passwords look hauntingly familiar and are being used, you need to change the password immediately.

I am trying my best to complete the Credit System for Invision version 2.1.4. Managing Xisto - Web Hosting and especially looking after the servers is very much time consuming.

My main objective to start this topic was to let members know the progress of the script. Orange box: this is where you type ftp.yourdomain.com. But if you own a subdomain, you might have to type in ftp.subdomain.domainname.com; depends on your host. For example, my address would be ftp.vanillaskye.org.

Orange red box: a bar that leads to properties, and more ftp stuff o_O. Some of them are just there, so don't worry about that bar.

Black box: Click this to get to your documents-- where you upload your stuff to your site.

Teal box: Teal box: You can click this to connect to your FTP. (another way to connect)

Dark turquoise box: this is your login information, say my user and password was apple and password was jacks -- put that in the boxes.

Dark Blue box: this is where you upload your stuff to your site-- highlight your stuff and then press the button that points to your ftp site (I press the one that points left).

Green box: it's a log to show how long or when its finished uploading your stuff onto your site.

How to upload files:

You can highlight all the files you want to upload and drag it to your ftp browser (for example look at the picture above-- highlight the files on the right and drag it to the left) or you can highlight the files you want to upload and click the button (in the blue box) pointing to your ftp browser. (left?)

 

FTP is fast & easy to use, at first I was confused and thought it'd be hard to find out how to use it; but when I got used to it.. it was easy peasy. So don't worry you'll get the hang of it. Haven't seen this kind of tutorial made this way anywhere so I thought I'd make it like this and hope it helped If this tutorial didn't, post on any problems

Ok there is a big topic going around about web browsers. The facts are web browsers are made to browse the web and bring back anything you tell it to no matter whats inside. This is why so many people get viruses. The important thing to do is learn how to use your browsers internet settings. If you learn the settings for your browser they apply to all. However there are safer web browsers the best are (Firefox) which is also faster than Internet Explorer. Then there is (Opera), this is the fastest and safest browser on the web. However some sites and things you do on the web are not compatible with Opera so you would then use Internet Explorer to go to those places. In the mean time you surf everywhere else with Opera. Why is it safer, because the company strives to make it safe by blocking the things that aim to harm your pc before it happens. Also If someone goes to attack your browser they will not be doing it correctly because Opera broadcasts that it is Internet Explorer so everyone on the web thinks you are using Internet Explorer instead of opera. There are certain sites that tell you what browser you are using in order to sell you something. Now they wont even now what you have. well you dont really need an uptight comp to run your own server i mean its so simple i run to instances of apache on on the default port and the other on port 3000 and they all jus take up 40mb ram each so you see its not that hard well heres part two.

to run your own server you are gonna need.

a server software apache preferable

perl. mysql and python (these are optional)

also if you wish to run a web hosting company you gonna need a webhosting control panel.

a mail server

a ftp server

and the most important thing about running your own server is to have it accessible to other people to see it, and this you are gonna need, a dynamic dns client software and a dynaminc dns provider.

you see when you are on a dial up network your ip address changes every time and you need the dynamin dns client to update you ip to the dynamic dns provider every time it changes.

 

well sorry for all the linux people but this article is jus gonna really focus on poeple running windows coz when it comes to servers everybody knows that windows people have a disadvantage.

so next im gonna show you 5 simple ways you could get your server online and working

 

1..download the tsw{the saing wamp}thats basically an acronym for windows apache and mysql / perl installer. it will do everything for the configuration of all that crap and save you days of headaches. trust me been there. you could download this from tsw the saint wamp download page

that is there latest version and it features most of the features i mentioned on the first article. and please note that it also features php 5.

 

2...just make sure that when you are installing it you do not install the services that it the ftp server and the mail server they got there coz they not so user friendly i will tell you which ones to use . for your mails server i stronly recommend that you use.hmail server and you can find that here. hmail server .com and for the ftp server you could possibly go for cerrubus ftp server according to me its the best just use you favourite search engine to find that.

 

3....configure both the ftp server and the mails server . that should be a walk through. its really easy .

 

4....dynamic dns...<> first get a uni.cc account. another domain that is and in the domain setup point it out to dns option. then point the external dns servers to ns1.afraid.org

ns2.afraid.org

then go to http://freedns.afraid.org/and register for a dns account and add your uni.cc domain name . it will probably take some time for the dns servers to change so be patient. then from there you can configure dynamic dns for your domain name. and for the dns client i insist you use dynsite for window. its the best and the easitest to use.

 

5..everything is done you got your own domain name webserver and everything there is nothing that the server you just setup . cannot run its mega featured lol. take my word for it.for the webhosting control panel for people using windows there is this great one called the zpanel you can grab it at http://www.thezpanel.com/ its for people using windows.
