  1. Well, I too havent heard of it. But here's what Wikipedia says:

    Mersenne prime

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Jump to: navigation, search

In mathematics, a Mersenne prime is a prime number that is one less than a prime power of two. For example, 31 (a prime number) = 32 − 1 = 25 − 1, and 5 also a prime number, so 31 is a Mersenne prime; so is 7 = 8 − 1 = 23 − 1. On the other hand, 2047 = 2048 − 1 = 211 − 1, for example, is not a prime, because although 11 is a prime (making it a candidate for being a Mersenne prime), 2047 is not prime (it is divisible by 89 & 23). Throughout modern times, the largest known prime number has very often been a Mersenne prime.

More generally, Mersenne numbers (not necessarily primes, but candidates for primes) are numbers that are one less than a prime power of two; hence,

    Mn = 2n − 1.

(most sources restrict the term Mersenne number to where n is prime as all Mersenne primes must be of this form as seen below)

Mersenne primes have a close connection to perfect numbers, which are numbers that are equal to the sum of their proper divisors. Historically, the study of Mersenne primes was motivated by this connection; in the 4th century BC Euclid demonstrated that if M is a Mersenne prime then M(M+1)/2 is a perfect number. Two millennia later, in the 18th century, Euler proved that all even perfect numbers have this form. No odd perfect numbers are known, and it is suspected that none exists (any that do have to belong to a significant number of special forms; see perfect number for more details).

It is currently unknown whether there is an infinite number of Mersenne primes.

Great amount of search is going on in this matter. Here is what http://www.mersenne.org/ says:

What are Mersenne primes and why do we search for them?

Prime numbers have long fascinated amateur and professional mathematicians. An integer greater than one is called a prime number if its only divisors are one and itself. The first prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, etc. For example, the number 10 is not prime because it is divisible by 2 and 5. A Mersenne prime is a prime of the form 2P-1. The first Mersenne primes are 3, 7, 31, 127 (corresponding to P = 2, 3, 5, 7). There are only 43 known Mersenne primes.

GIMPS, the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, was formed in January 1996 to discover new world-record-size Mersenne primes. GIMPS harnesses the power of thousands of small computers like yours to search for these "needles in a haystack".

Most GIMPS members join the search for the thrill of possibly discovering a record-setting, rare, and historic new Mersenne prime. Of course, there are many other reasons.

  2. when i was in 5th grade, which was 5 years ago, this was right when google first came out i think...
anyways, i remember my 5th grade teacher telling me that the word google was the biggest number possible and that it was bigger than infinity. Back then i believed it but then you really think about it, how is a number even possibly bigger than infinity if infinity goes on FOREVER?

and is google EVEN a number?????

    anybody know?

Google is a number. i.e. one followed by a hundred zeroes like all have said it right here.

But it isnt greater than infinity. Read on!

Googol is a number which is 1 followed be 100 zeros.
A googol is the large number 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, that is, the digit 1 followed by one hundred zeros. One way of grasping its size is that it is equivalent to multiplying 1 million by 1 million 16 times, then further multiplying that by ten thousand.

Using the short scale, a googol is equal to ten duotrigintillion. Using the long scale, it is equal to ten thousand sexdecillion (or sedecillion), or ten sexdecilliard/sedecilliard.

A googolplex is a number that is 1 followed by a googol of zeroes.

    See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googolplex

This tells you that Googolplex is a really big number.

But just add one more zero to it. You will get a number 10 times greater than the previous number!
This means that "Infinity" is undefined. You cant tell what is infinity.

  3. What would you do? I would go crazy. My life is computers. I can code an everything. Its only fun for people who know how to code with HTML and DHTML and all that good stuff including Java+JavaScript. So anyways im looking for the following things to be answered:
What would you do if computers didnt exist?

What would you do if computers didnt exist?
    ________________________________________________________________
    Would you go crazy?
No. coz I wouldnt miss it since I have never seen them.
    Would YOU not exist?
    Computers dont decide my life!
Would you be bored all day?
I would be involved in something else.
Would you be board at school all day?
I get bored at school even in these days.

Nah! I would be playing, playing and playing.
Would you be determined to invent computers?
I dont think so. I wonder how did Babbage get the idea of computers!
Would you keep a computer secret in your closet and use it when no ones looking?
Well, I wouldnt have a computer if it wasnt invented.
Would you just be a all around idiot?
No. I dont see any cause of being an Idiot

    Of course yes.
    Would you die of boredom?
I would be indulged in other tasks.
    Would you invent games?
Computer Games cant be invented because of the absence of computers. But I dunno about real Games. If I have to invent one, I must get an Idea. But nowadays, I get ideas only about computer games
    Would you invent more games?
    God alone knows!
Would you think about inventing computers?
If the idea of computers stroke my brain!

  4. Hello All
Have You ever seen the above MS Agents in any of the websites ? They Demonstrate things,Explain,Greet your visitor, Give Information about the user and above all they give a pretty cool cool to your website! Want them on your site?
This tutorial will explain on how to Integerate MS Agents in your website!

WoW! I have never seen such thing before.

I believe that this has not become famous yet. (Since I have never seen this at any website).

But the two greatest demerits are that

    Internet Explorer must be Used

The software of the Microsoft asistant must be installed.

These can be the basic reasons of why this is not included in Big Websites!

  5. How To Read And Write And Files

    a simple trick using php

    <?$thefile = "name.txt"; /* Our filename as defined earlier */$towrite = "Black widgets rule!"; /* What we'll write to the file */$openedfile = fopen($thefile, "w");fwrite($openedfile, $towrite);fclose($openedfile);?>

    Any questions about this tutorial?

What if I dont want to add the contents but I want to add something?

Can I move the file pointer to the end of the following and protect the previously entered contents from being deleted?

    For example:

    Say I have a website.

I have made a form in which people can send me messages.

I could use mail() to get it as a mail message.

But I want to store such info in a single file one after the other.

    Is it possible?

Another question : Does it support multi-line passages?

i.e. Can many lines be sotred in a single file?

  6. Code Spy Code

Description Anyone who comes to ur forum's IP Adress, Site they came From, Their Browser and the time they came will get saved in a place that only the admin knows the location of...

That was a pretty good tut. Thanks

Will we get only the details :IP's, Browsers, Time, site

Cant we get the OS name which the user is using?

  7. I have the darnest time while navigating the internet these days. Has this happen to you? You visit a site for your research and enter a site that causes multiple browsers to open (but in different size). But your prefered browser size is not full but a certain size (probably you made it such wide and sich high). Or, you test your website for different resolutions. But the last browser window you closed caused your new browsers to open in different sizes... ack!

My computer screens are either in 1280x1024 or widescreen mode. And thus i want my browser to be in fixed 1024x768 (for both resolution testing for webpages or just because I like it that way). I thought I could be satisfied with editing registry but that wasn't enough. I found this code from B&T's Tips and Scripts.

    java script:resizeTo(1024,768);

*there's no spce between "java" and "script" but this board is protecting it from malicious attempt so it inserted a space. Please make sure there's no space, i.e. "javascript"

This one liner, when enterend as URL for a bookmark or entered to the address bar, can reclaim your browser to determined size by you. All you need to do is open your browser, add bookmark and enter the above code as URL. I did it with "about:blank" so that no other favicon or other information was associated to the bookmarked link. The IE gave me error messages while saving this bookmark URL, but I continued by clicking OK and it works fine. So i now have three bookmarks with 3 different browser sizes that I can change on a demand. <_<

This code has been tested on IE and Firefox without an issue. If there's a better way of doing this task, please feel free to share.

    One question up here:

    What does this do actually?

Does it resets the browser resolution

Or Does it resets the computer's screen resolution?

It would be just great if it resets the browser resolution

coz different browser resolutions are posing a great problem for webmasters!

It effects the look of the website.
