Ubuntu is very good, also if you get a chance you should try Sabayon, its a distro based on gentoo, quite complete and works with a lot of hardware, works well with wireless too.

Iv'e Found that mplayer handles almost everything. Or VLC which handles pretty much anythin thrown at it. You can usually get it through whatever package manager your distro uses.
