  2. Avast! Home Edition is another free anti-virus solution, which has real-time protection. It features P2P and instant messenger virus protection.avast! 4 Home Edition is a full-featured antivirus package designed exclusively for home users and non-commercial use. Both of these conditions should be met! Our company offers the Home Edition free of charge, since, in our
opinion, it is possible to avoid global virus spreading by efficient prevention; however, many users are not able to or do not want to pay for antivirus software. This page will show you the most important features of this program.

Institutions (even non-commercial ones) are not allowed to use avast! Home Edition. However, ALWIL Software provides the full line of avast! antivirus products at special discount prices for non-profit, charity, educational and government institutions. Please see our price lists for details.

The latest version of this program is 4.7.

    Features overview

P2P and IM Shields Integrated Virus Cleaner
Network Shield Support for 64-bit Windows
    Web Shield Internationalization
    Antivirus kernel Virus Buletin Award

The latest version of avast! antivirus kernel features outstanding detection abilities, together with high performance. You can expect 100% detection of In-the-Wild viruses (viruses already spreading between users) and excellent detection of Trojan horses.

The kernel is certified by ICSA; and frequently takes part in the tests of Virus Bulletin magazine, often yielding the VB100 award.

The avast! engine also features outstanding unpacking support. It can scan inside the following archives: ARJ, ZIP, MIME (+ all associated formats), MAPI (Outlook pst files), DBX (Outlook Express archives), RAR, TAR, GZIP, CAB, BZIP2, ZOO, ACE, ARC, LHA/LHX, TNEF (winmail.dat), CPIO, CHM, RPM, ISO, 7ZIP and SIS. It also supports a number of executable packers (such as PKLite, Diet, UPX, ASPack, PeShield, FSG, MEW etc.).

Last, but not least, it can also scan for viruses hidden in Alternate data streams on NTFS volumes.
    Simple User Interface

The Simple User Interface is used to start on-demand scanning, work with the results and change various options. Basic resident protection settings can be modified here.

The Simple User Interface is the main application of avast! 4 Home Edition. You can start additional avast! modules from here, such as the Virus Chest, Updater or Log Viewer.

The appearance of the Simple User Interface is very flexible. It supports so-called skins, allowing users to change the appearance of the application interface. The main package contains three skins, with additional skins available from our web pages.
    Standard resident protection

Resident protection (the real-time protection of the operating system), is one of the most important parts of an antivirus program today. avast! features a powerful resident module that is able to detect a virus before it has any chance to infect your computer.

avast! Home Edition contains resident protection of the computer file system and a resident module for e-mails and news.

File system protection ensures that no virus will be started on the computer. It offers a wide range of settings, such as the possibility to specify that files will be scanned during copying, or that the scanning will include files with given set of extensions only.

E-mail/News protection consists of two independent modules; first, there is a generic scanner working on the SMTP/POP3/IMAP4/NNTP protocol level. It is capable of protecting any existing e-mail client that uses these protocols. Second, there is a special plugin for MS Outlook only; the mail scanning is completely transparent, requiring no special settings.

A new feature of version 4 is heuristic analysis of e-mail scanners. This feature can protect against new, unknown viruses and worms that are not possible to detect by the usual means. The heuristic module performs a thorough investigation of every e-mail message and watches for suspicious signs, that might announce virus presence. When the number of those signs exceeds a user-defined level, the message is considered dangerous and the user is warned.
    P2P and IM Shields

Avast features a module for the protection of IM (Instant Messaging, "chat") programs, and a module for the protection of P2P (peer-to-peer) programs. The list of supported IM and P2P programs is extensive with more than 30 programs currently supported.

While chat itself would not impose any serious security risks in terms of viruses, today's IM applications are far from being just chatting tools: most of them support more or less sophisticated file sharing methods - which may quite easily lead to virus infections, if not properly monitored.

The P2P protection module doesn't need much explanation - on today's P2P networks (such as Kazaa) there are thousands of infected files, and an effective protection is a must.
    Network Shield

A new resident protection module was added to avast! 4.5: the Network Shield. This module provides protection against known Internet worms/attacks. It analyses all network traffic and scans it for malicious contents. It can be viewed as a lightweight firewall (or more precisely, an IDS (Intrusion Detection System)).

The Network Shield is only available on NT-based systems (Windows NT/2000/XP/2003).
    Web Shield

Web Shield is a unique feature of avast! that enables it to monitor and filter all HTTP traffic coming from the Web sites on the Internet. Since an increasing number of viruses (and other malware, such as adware, spyware and dialers) are being distributed via the World Wide Web, the need for an effective countermeasures has also increased. The Web Shield acts as a transparent HTTP proxy and is compatible with all major web browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, FireFox, Mozilla and Opera.

Unlike most competitive solutions, Web Shield's impact on browsing speed is almost negligible. This is because of a unique feature called "Intelligent Stream Scan" that lets the Web Shield module scan objects on-the-fly, without the need of caching them locally. Stream scanning is performed in operating memory only (without the necessity to flush the contents to disk), providing maximum possible throughput rates.
    Automatic updates

Automatic updates are another need in virus protection. Both the virus database and the program itself can be updated automatically. The updates are incremental, with only new or missing data downloaded: thus reducing the transfer heavily. The typical size of a virus database update are tens of KB; program updates are typically in the hundreds of KB range.

If your Internet connection is persistent, the updates are performed completely automatically at fixed time intervals. If you connect to the Internet only occasionally, avast! watches your connection and tries to perform the update when you are online.

Having an up-to-date virus database and antivirus program is the most certain way to protect your computer.
    Virus Chest

The Virus Chest can be thought of as a folder on your disk drive, having special properties that make it a safe, isolated place suitable for storing certain files. You can work with the files in the Chest, though with some security restrictions.

The main properties of the Virus Chest are complete isolation from the rest of the operating system. No outside process, such as a virus, may access the files inside, and the fact that the files inside the Chest may not be run (executable), there is no danger in storing viruses there.
    System Integration

avast! antivirus features outstanding integration into your system. A scan can be started directly from Windows Explorer, by clicking a folder or a file with your right mouse button and selecting the corresponding choice from the menu.

A special screen-saver is also provided, that, when running, performs virus scanning. avast! antivirus works together with your favorite screen-saver, so you don't have to change your personal settings to use it.

A new option with this release is the boot-time scan (Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 only). This important feature allows a user to instigate scanning before a virus is activated, in the case that a virus is suspected to be active on your computer already.
    Integrated avast! Virus Cleaner

Since version 4.1, avast! includes the Virus Cleaner, a tool designed for a complete removal of most common infections from already-infected computers. So now is avast! capable even to reliably heal (not only detect) the most common malware.

The number of viruses/worms supported by the Virus Cleaner is constantly growing. For the most up-to-date information we suggest to visit Cleaner's own page (for emergency purposes we also offer the Virus Cleaner as a standalone product, capable of running without installed avast).
    Support for 64-bit Windows

avast! Home/Professional now fully supports the 64-bit Windows platform. ALWIL Software is anticipating massive take-up of this platform, as Windows XP 64-Bit Edition will support up to 32 GB of RAM and 16 TB of virtual memory, enabling applications to run faster when working with large data sets. Applications can preload substantially more data into virtual memory, allowing rapid access by the 64-bit extensions of the processor. This reduces the time for loading data into virtual memory or seeking, reading, and writing to data storage devices, making applications run faster and more efficiently.

Regular (32-bit) antivirus applications are unable to operate correctly on the 64-bit Windows platform because they rely on 32-bit kernel-mode drivers. The new avast! uses native 64-bit drivers, delivering the same level of protection as in the 32-bit Windows environments. The installation package is the same for 32-bit and 64-bit versions - the setup program automatically detects the operating system it is running on, and installs all necessary files. You may find more information on avast! Antivirus and Windows x64 Edition page.
    Internationalization

Commitment to internationalization is one of the key benefits of avast!. During the last 2 years, avast! has been translated to a number of languages and the latest version added additional language modules. Currently the list of supported languages is: English, Bulgarian, Chinese (both Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish.

  3. Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

To see a list of threats Spybot-S&D can remove, in the navigation bar at the left click on Support --> Threats. For an introduction to Spybot-S&D, please read the tutorial. If you fear incompatibility with other software you are now using, although we can assure you that there is no danger you can review our compatibility overview which lists some software whose compatibility has been analyzed.

Spybot-S&D can also clean usage tracks, an interesting function if you share your computer with other users and don't want them to see what you have been working on. And for professional users, Spybot-S&D allows you to fix some registry inconsistencies and extended reports. A list of all the apllication's features is also available.

    - Updated incoming connection handling to not require a new thread for each
incoming connection. This will decrease memory and resource requirements
for all Ultrapeers and anyone who shares a large number of files.
    - Improved firewall-firewall transfer support. These kinds of transfers will
use less memory and resources than prior versions.
    - Vastly improved download handling. All downloads are now processed on a
single thread, which will decrease memory and resource requirements for all
    users.
    - Removed artificial bandwidth limitiation of ~150KB/s per host. LimeWire will
now upload and download at the full available capacity.
    - Improved temporary buffer storage. LimeWire will make use of preallocated
buffers, using much less overall memory.
    - Fixed download throttle to apply to all downloaded traffic (including HTTP
    header traffic).
    - Updated DAAP (iTunes Sharing) to be snappier and use less memory.
    - Updated DAAP (iTunes Sharing) to use the same I/O subsystem as the rest of
    LimeWire.
    - Updated DAAP (iTunes Sharing) to allow Videos to be shared also.
    - Added the ability to append (#) to duplicate downloaded files. Thanks to
    'MaTZ' for contributing this!
    - Fixed reading saved spam training data so that corrupted data will not crash
    LimeWire.
    - Fixed 'Print All Stack Traces' in the Console to print multiple stack traces
from threads with the same name.
    - Improved the look & feel of the LimeWire Setup Wizard dialogs.
    - Added the ability for LimeWire to automatically add itself to the Windows
Firewall Exception list, removing one step from the LimeWire Setup Wizard for
Windows XP users (and improving LimeWire's experience for those who set it
    up incorrectly).
    - Removed bugs@limewire.com links and instead directed people to 'Support' on
    limewire.com.
    - Fixed 'No Internet Connection' dialog so it only appears once instead of
stacking up multiple times if you're away from the computer.
    - Added a new 'Language Button' to the status bar, so users who see LimeWire in
a strange language have an easy way to fix it.
    - Added the ability to 'Get More Results', which will do another search and not
erase results already displayed. Thanks to Philip Schalm for contributing
    this!
    - Fixed 'bitrate' column to sort properly.
    - Fixed 'length' column to display time in HH:MM:SS instead of a lot of seconds.

    ---
    - Improved connection management. LimeWire will use much less resources and
memory when making outgoing connections or starting a download.
    - Support for 'Secure Results'. These are messages that LimeWire can verify are
secure and not tampered with in any way. Some messages that contain risky
data (such as a URL to go to) are discarded if they are not secure. Secure
Results will appear in your search results quality column with a 'lock' icon
    instead of the stars.
    - Support for 'Content Filtering'. This allows users to optionally have
LimeWire check all files they upload and/or download against a list of content
that copyright owners have requested be removed from the network. This
feature is in active development. To learn more about it, visit
    the content filtering 'about' page.
    - Improved temporary task handling. LimeWire will use a pool of cached threads
to handle long-lived tasks instead of constructing a new one for each. This
should significantly improve performance on some machines.
    - Improved checking for a live internet connection. LimeWire should do a better
job of knowing when the internet is alive or not.
    - Fixed the sizing of the LimeWire GUI. It will now take into account all sorts
of intrusions on the desktop space, such as the dock on OSX or taskbar on
Windows (be it on the top, left, bottom, or right). Folks who liked to keep
LimeWire maximimized may have noticed that it shrank slightly every time
LimeWire was restarted. This is now fixed.

    4.10.9 (02.12.2006)
    ---
    - Reduced increased amount of disk I/O by reverting change that uncapped the
implicit bandwidth limit. We'll fix it a better way for a future version.

per stream. Transfers now have a nearly infinite bandwidth limit.
    - Added support for sharing video files via DAAP (to programs such as iTunes).
    - Fixed so that some international characters do not cause errors when sending
    a search.
    - Fixed search results so that if junk results are sent to the bottom and no
column is sorted, junk results are still sent to the bottom.

    4.9.0 (06.22.2005)
    ---
    Searching:
LimeWire now recognizes more types of licenses in the search results. In
addition to Creative Commons licenses, which LimeWire 4.3 added, "Weedshare"
licenses and arbitrary licenses in WMA & WMV files are recognized. If you
enable the 'License' column you can see if any search result had a license.
You can then right-click on the item and choose to 'View License' to verify the
information. As if that wasn't enough, you can now right-click on any search
result and choose to 'Download As', saving the file to any arbitrary location.
You can also choose to search for similiar kinds of results from a new
    'Search More' submenu.

    Downloading:
In a nutshell, downloads just work better. They're faster, they're smarter,
and they use fewer resources. LimeWire now has vastly improved support for
large files due to a highly optimized swarming algorithm. These features will
continue to speed up downloads even further in the future, as more users
    upgrade.

    Sharing:
We've gone to great lengths to make sure that you don't accidentally share
files you didn't mean to. LimeWire will now detect directories that are
"sensitive", prompting the user to confirm that they really do want to share
them. You can also now choose to stop sharing a single file from a shared
folder, or stop sharing a subdirectory of a shared folder. For users who want
to share files from arbitrary locations, you can also choose to share any
individual file. These files will show in a special 'Individually Shared Files'
item in the library. The Library tab has also been revamped to give you more
control over what you're sharing while maintaining LimeWire's famous
    ease-of-use .

    Network Messaging:
The entire messaging architecture has been redesigned and rearchitected to use
less resources and less memory. Ultrapeers should notice a significant speed
and memory improvement when connected to many hosts. In the future this will
allow your searches to return results faster and reach more hosts.

    The nitty gritty on changes:
    - Changed Gnutella messaging architecture to be single-threaded (using
    non-blocking I/O calls).
    - Heavily optimized reading & writing of messaging, from TCP, UDP & Multicast.
    - Removed many unnecessary threads, allowing LimeWire to use less overall
    resources.
    - Fixed bug where save files for multiple downloaders could conflict. LimeWire
will now prompt for a new save location.
    - Added many 'Save Location' features for downloads. You can now choose an
arbitrary save location for any download, as well as change it at any time
    during the download.
    - LimeWire will now let you know if the file you're downloading matches any
file in the library (via a hash lookup). This is in addition to the
already-existing checks that prompted you about overwriting a file.
    - The library now supports sharing (and not sharing) single files and folders.
    - LimeWire now recognizes "sensitive" directories, asking the user whether they
really want to share that directory.
    - Fixed partial file sharing to only advertise ranges that are verified as
    valid.
    - Fixed alternate locations to be shared among shared files, incomplete files,
and downloads, instead of storing duplicate copies for each.
    - Optimized Gnutella connections to leaves (or from leaves to Ultrapeers) to
not use as much memory, since they require less flow control support.
    - Optimized query throttling & QRP tables. When LimeWire becomes busy, it now
sends a message telling its Ultrapeer and/or neighbors to stop sending it
queries. The Ultrapeer will remove the leaf's QRP information from the
combined Ultrapeer QRP tables when sending out combined tables, if the leaf
    was busy.
    - Added many more extensions to the list of shared extensions.
    - All message processing and dispatching is now done in a single thread, which
will reduce resources and contention for various shared objects.
    - Proxies for downloads are now saved with the download so that firewalled
hosts can be reused when restarting LimeWire.
    - Any host who we succesfully connected to while downloading is saved for the
    future use if LimeWire restarts.
    - Added support for expiring alternation locations after LimeWire sends them
out too many times. This ensures that older hosts who may have left the
network will fall out of memory after some time.
    - Updated the default list of GWebCaches.
    - Major magnet upgrades. LimeWire now can handle many more magnet links, as
well as automatically opening a search tab for very ambiguous magnets.
    - Fixed some errors with inflating & deflating Gnutella message traffic that
could have caused the connection to drop.
    - Added support for randomly downloading parts of the file when doing a
download. Preference is given to the beginning of the file for files that
can be previewed. This will ensure that the file is spread to many hosts,
removing a single point of failure, while still allowing you to preview files
    as they download.
    - Heavily optimized the entire downloading process, giving downloads a major
    speed boost.
    - Requesting ranges for download from a host can now be done in parallel.
Previously, LimeWire would only request one part of a file per time from any
given host, reducing the speed of a download to the lowest speed of any
    connected source.
    - Added support for verifying the integrity of a download as the download is
progressing. This will fix the problem where many downloads get to 99% and
then restart. This will also let you know that a download is getting many
corrupt bytes and kill it before it wastes all your bandwidth.
    - Fixed the progress-bar in uploads to show the correct progress for swarmed
    uploads.
    - Optimized downloading to prefer partial sources & firewalled sources first,
reducing the load on hosts who have the complete file and are not firewalled.
    - Fixed many problems where downloads could have disk errors, offering the user
to option to download to a new location.
    - Optimized downloading to do disk I/O in a different thread than network I/O.
    - Heavily optimized downloads by pinging possible sources prior to connecting.
LimeWire will connect to hosts who respond to the ping first, as well as
learn about other potential sources and whether or not the responding host
    was available for uploading.
    - Added entries to the library's popup menus that easily allow you to stop
sharing or start sharing one of the files or folders.
    - Added the ability for downloads to be saved to different locations based on
the media type of the download.
    - Added new 'Saved Folder' entries to the library that show the saved files in
the different media type saved folders.
    - Added recognition of "Weedshare" licenses. These are WMA/WMV/ASF files that
are freely shareable and licensed to allow three free plays, after which you
can purchase the file. You'll get a cut of the profit from any other person
who purchases a file that you've shared after purchasing it. Enable the
'License' column in search results to see these kinds of files.
    - Added recognition of WMA/WMV/ASF files that require license lookups prior to
playing. Enable the 'License' column in search results to see these kinds of
    files.
    - Added the ability to parse OGM, AVI, WMA, WMV, ASF and FLAC files for
    metadata.
    - Revised the sizes for Tiger Trees at different file size depths to ensure
that validating downloads uses sane block sizes.
    - Disallowed a ':' character in search results on OSX.
    - Fixed some leaked Sockets if LimeWire was set up to use HTTP or SOCKS
    proxies.
    - Updated the schemas for Audio and Video searches, removing unnecessary fields
and improving the order of remaining ones.
    - Added the ability to stop sending bugs to LimeWire's bug server for older
    LimeWire versions.
    - Improved the Internal Error dialog.
    - Massively improved the autocompletion, using a dropdown box that allows you
to choose from any possible completion. You can also delete your
autocomplete history at any time, without restarting LimeWire.
    - Fixed deadlock in DAAP, for streaming tunes to iTunes.
    - Require Java 1.4 for using LimeWire.
    - Fixed multi-line labels to expand to the largest unbreakable phrase.
    - Added the ability to use installed Java Look & Feels other than LimeWire's
Themes or the system Look & Feel.
    - Fixed many issues with standard list editor components (lists that can be
added or remove to) and allowed more keyboard actions.
    - Added the ability to send magnet links of search results or files in the
library to the clipboard, for pasting elsewhere.
    - Added the ability to start a search for files that are similar to a search
result, a file in the library, or an item in a search filter box.
    - Cleaned up the Chat window.
    - Cleaned up the Connections tab, changing the 'add' feature into a button that
prompts for further input, and fixing many spacing issues.
    - Added more information to the advanced tooltips in downloads.
    - Added many more integrity checks prior to starting a download from a search
result, offering the user the option to save to a new file if it is going to
overwrite an existing one, as well as many more options.
    - Revamped much of the library, making it more intuitive and easier to use.
    - Fixed some tray icon bugs on Linux. LimeWire should now show up correctly in
    the system tray.
    - Sped up the 'Options' dialog appearing. Inidividual options items are now
lazily loaded as you click on them.
    - Added the ability to choose if you want to receive upgrade notices for Major
upgrades, Beta upgrades, or Service releases.
    - Added tooltips to the main 'Search Types' in the Search tab.

    4.8.1 (03.09.2005)
    ---
    - Rewrote version update mechanism.
    - Removed some unnecessary magnet handling code.
    - Fixed deadlock in DAAP code. Thanks to Roger Kapsi for contributing this.
    - Move the splash window to the back if there is an error during startup.
Thanks to Felix Berger for contributing this.
    - Attempted fix for some fatal startup errors.
    - Added tray icon on some Linux systems.
    - Removed 'Idle' status indication.

    * Minimum screen resolution: 800 x 600

    -----------------------------------------------------
    Change Log:
    ------------------------------------------------------
    * Version 2.50

Redesigned SendMail utility (external utility, located in "samples" directory):

    * Now you may specify primary and backup SMTP servers. When SendMail tries to send e-mail, first it uses Primary SMTP server. If due to some error first attempt fails, SendMail tries to send e-mail using Backup SMTP server.
    * Now utility supports several authentication methods that could be specified separately for primary and backup mail servers:
    - Plain password
    - Login
    - Cram-MD5
    - POP before SMTP
    * Now you may specify language encoding of the mail message

    HostMonitor utility:

    * When you add test items, a range of IP addresses (e.g. 192.12.1.1 - 192.12.1.254) rather than a single address could be specified now. In the latter case, HostMonitor will create a separate test for each address within the range.
    * Now you may select multiple test items from the list (hold CTRL or SHIFT keys while selecting items) and remove all selected tests at once
    * If you sort test items by host name, IP-Tools recognizes IP addresses and sorts them in network order.

    The following issues were resolved:

    * Previous version of SendMail utility sometimes displayed "RcptName list is empty" error and did not send e-mail. Problem fixed in current version
    * In rare cases on some systems IP-Tools could display error when you close application. Fixed

    * Version 2.40

    Improvements:

    * New SNMP Scanner utility: allows you to scan a range or list of hosts, performing Ping, DNS and SNMP queries.
    * Improved Trap Watcher utility: now it can accept SNMPv2 messages.
    * Improved Connections utility: "Drop connection" popup menu item allows you to close established TCP connection (you need to have administrator's privileges in order to close connections).
    * some minor changes.

    * Version 2.30

    Improvements:

    * New Utility: Trap Watcher allows you to receive SNMP Trap messages - unsolicited messages from a device (such as router, server) to an SNMP console. IP-Tools can record information about all or some specific messages into log files; launch 3rd party applications in response to specific SNMP traps; etc.
    * HostMonitor utility: 2 new fields (Alive/Dead Ratio and Average Reply) provide statistical information about tested hosts
    * HostMonitor utility: now you can change sorting mode by clicking on header of appropriate column
    * SendMail tool:
    - now you may provide body of the e-mail message from command line (Body parameter)
    - now status window does not disappear right after successful or unsuccessful attempt to send an e-mail. It stays on the screen for 10 seconds. You may click the [Close]button to close the window immediately or click the [stop] button to stop countdown and keep utility active.

    Modifications:

    * Port Scanner: format of the string that can be sent to the remote host upon detecting an open port has been changed. Instead of ^@ .. ^Z use sequences formatted %XX where XX is a hexadecimal code of a character (byte). E.g. HELLO%0D%0A would send HELLO followed by a character ASCII 13 (line feed) and ASCII 10 (new line).
P.S. UDP Scanner utility and Advanced Host Monitor use the same format.

    The following issues were resolved:

    * WhoIs utility: some servers after receiving request, first close TCP connection for read and then send reply. In this case IP-Tools could not display complete response from the server. Fixed.
    * Due to bug in Windows API IP-Tools could use different (than specified) TCP port, e.g. it used port #25 when you specify port #6400. Fixed.

    * Version 2.20

    Improvements:

    * New utility: UDP Scanner
    * New utility: HTTP client
    * Improved Connection Monitor: If you start the program on Windows XP system, IP-Tools will display name of the process that uses TCP/UDP port for each connection in the list.
    * Improved Connection Monitor: new items added into popup menu:
    - Copy Local address
    - Copy Remote address
    * Improved HostMonitor utility: new option "sort by" added
    * Improved GetTime utility: now it can synchronize time correctly even in half-hour time zones (e.g. Newfoundland, Adelaide, or Katmandu).

    The following issues were resolved:

    * Connection Monitor: error "List index out of bounds" that occurred on some systems is fixed.

    * Version 2.08

    * New item in "Help" menu: "WWW Forum" - link to the online forum at http://www.ks-soft.net/
The following issues have been resolved:
    * IP-Monitor utility: fixed memory leakage
    * NS Lookup utility: did not work in "Advanced Name Server Lookup" mode when DNS server was specified by host name (not IP address)
    * Ping and Trace function failed when echo packet size was bigger than 255 bytes

    * Version 2.07

    * HostMonitor utility didn't work with some regional date settings (like ddd/MM/YYYY, dd/MMMM/yy). Fixed.

  9. What is eMule? At dawn of May 13th 2002 a guy called Merkur was dissatisfied with the original eDonkey2000 client and was convinced he could do better. So he did. He gathered other developers around him, and eMule Project was born. Their aim was to put the client back on track where eDonkey had been famous before, adding tons of new features and a nice GUI. They couldn't imagine what impact this decision would have...

As of today, eMule is one of the biggest and most reliable peer-to-peer file sharing clients around the world. Thanks to it's open source policy many developers are able to contribute to the project, making the network more efficient with each release.

    What does eMule mean?
The name "eMule" comes from an animal called "Mule" which is somehow similar to a donkey :D

    How often is eMule updated?
eMule is not updated regularly, but at the moment the frequencies are between 1 and 3 months. Don't take this for guaranteed.

A list of a few features available.

    * Clients use several networks to create one reliable network. (ED2K, Source Exchange, Kad)
o Kad is now in an open testphase, eMule v0.42 can be enabled to use Kad
    * eMule's Queue and Credit system helps to ensure that everyone will get the file he wants by promoting those that upload back to the network.
    * eMule is completely free. eMule is also completely free of any Adware, Spyware, and ect. We do this for fun and knowledge, not for money.
    * Each file checked for corruptions while downloading to ensure an error free file.
    * The eMules Intelligent Corruption Control helps to speed up the correction of corrupted parts.
    * Auto priorities and Source management allows you to start many downloads without having to monitor them.
    * The Preview function allows you to look at your Videos and Archives before they are completed. For video previewing, we recommend the Video Lan Client.
    * The eMule features webservices and a webserver that allows you to have quick access to and from the internet.
    * You can create categories for your download to organize them.
    * To find the file you want, eMule offers a wide range of search possibilities which include: Servers (Local, and Global), web based (Jigle, and Filedonkey), and Kad (Still in Alpha).
    * eMule also allows you to use very complex Boolean searches that make the searches much more flexible.
    * With the messaging and friend system, you can send messages to other Clients and add them as friends. In your friend list, you can always see if a friend is online.
    * With the build in IRC client, you can chat with other downloaders and chatters around the globe.

  10. Best Free HTML Editor

    Information

This is one of my most requested items but I've not been able to give any product my full endorsement. There have been any number of contenders: Amaya for example, impressed with its standards compliance but was incomplete while Selida looked slick but had just too many bugs. Finally a reasonably competent contender has arrived on the scene in the form of the Open Source Nvu [1]. It's not perfect by any means but it's the best out there.

In reality Nvu is nothing new but rather a reworking of the old Netscape Composer. Composer was always a solid product and the revamp has lifted the product into another class. Here is an HTML editor and site manager that's easy enough for beginners to use but powerful enough to build large sites. It's closer in concept to Microsoft's FrontPage more than any other product but unlike FrontPage it, thankfully, produces standards compliant code. Its easy-to-use WYSIWYG editor will delight HTML newbies while HTML honchos can simply click a tab to switch to code view. Multiple tabs can be kept open to allow simultaneous editing and there is excellent support for forms, tables and templates. An internal spell-checker is included. CSS is handled through the CaScadeS editor from Mozilla Composer. Nvu also has the handy ability to call W3C's HTML validator from within the product. It's also extensible via XUL.

Nvu can upload files to your site via FTP and has some basic site management features but this is not its strength. Indeed the FTP side of the program has proved so problematic for some users that they have switched to using an external FTP client for uploading their sites. Some users have also reported problems with their HTML getting scrambled.

Because of these bugs I don't recommend the official version of Nvu but rather the unofficial release called KompoZer [2]. This version is still not bug free but it's a lot better than the official release.

Overall Nvu is an impressive product that has yet to achieve its full potential. No, it's not a replacement for commercial products like DreamWeaver but for those looking for a free, easy to use, WYSIWYG HTML it's an easy first choice.

If you want an editor that puts you closer to the code then you might consider 1st Page 2000. It's a free, earlier version of Evrsoft's [3] excellent 1st Page 2006 editor and while lacking many of the features of the latter, is still a sound product. It's not the best choice though for HTML newbies. Note: The download seems to have been removed from the vendor's site. It is available elsewhere though [3].

HTML coders should also check out PSPad [5]. It's a general purpose programming editor but it supports HTML syntax highlighting and allows on-the-fly editing of your server code that relieves you of the need to separately upload code changes using FTP. As a bonus it can be run directly from the .exe file without installa

Click on Quickconnect or press Enter to connect to the server.

    2. Navigating on the server

After a successful connection attempt, a list of files and folders appears on the right side of the main window. The current folder is listed in the edit field on the top. You can change the current folder by double-clicking a folder or by entering the folder name into the edit field and pressing enter. You may also right-click the file and folder list and select Open from the context menu to change the current folder. You will notice a folder called ".." displayed in all directories. This folder allows you to go up to the parent directory of the current folder.

    3. Navigating on your machine

Navigating on your machine works almost like navigating on the server. There's only one addition: The folders on your machine are arranged in a tree for faster navigation. A tree is also availabe for the remote side, but it is hidden by default. The remote tree can be shown anytime by clicking on the remote tree icon in the toolbar Posted Image.

To change the current folder either on your machine or on the server, just select a tree item in the appropriate tree.

    4. Transferring files

You can upload or download a file by double-clicking on it. It will be added to the transfer queue and the transfer starts automatically. To transfer folders and/or multiple files, select them and right-click the selection. Then you can click on Upload/Download in the popup menu.

    Posted Image

You can also drag the files from one side and drop them on the other side. To add files to the queue so that they will be transferred later, select them and click Add to Queue from the popup menu. You may also drag the files directly into the queue. Click on the Posted Imagebutton on the toolbar to start the transfer.

  14. PuTTY Is A Great Tool To Use With Xisto! For Example You Can Connect By SSH To It, If You Have It Enabled It's A Easy Tool To Use!
PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator. It is written and maintained primarily by Simon Tatham.

The latest version is beta 0.60.

LEGAL WARNING: Use of PuTTY, PSCP, PSFTP and Plink is illegal in countries where encryption is outlawed. I believe it is legal to use PuTTY, PSCP, PSFTP and Plink in England and Wales and in many other countries, but I am not a lawyer and so if in doubt you should seek legal advice before downloading it. You may find this site useful (it's a survey of cryptography laws in many countries) but I can't vouch for its correctness.

Use of the Telnet-only binary (PuTTYtel) is unrestricted by any cryptography laws.

Here are the PuTTY files themselves:

    * PuTTY (the Telnet and SSH client itself)
    * PSCP (an SCP client, i.e. command-line secure file copy)
    * PSFTP (an SFTP client, i.e. general file transfer sessions much like FTP)
    * PuTTYtel (a Telnet-only client)
    * Plink (a command-line interface to the PuTTY back ends)
    * Pageant (an SSH authentication agent for PuTTY, PSCP and Plink)
    * PuTTYgen (an RSA and DSA key generation utility).

The files we offer below are cryptographically signed. We also supply cryptographically signed lists of MD5 checksums. To download our public keys and find out more about our signature policy, visit the Keys page. If you need a Windows program to compute MD5 checksums, you could try the one at this site. (This MD5 program is also cryptographically signed by its author.)

The latest release version (0.60). This will generally be a version I think is reasonably likely to work well. If you have a problem with the release version, it might be worth trying out the latest development snapshot (below) to see if I've already fixed the bug, before reporting it to me.

    Access via Subversion

If you want to keep track of the PuTTY development right up to the minute, or view the change logs for each of the files in the source base, you can access the PuTTY master Subversion repository directly.

The Subversion URL you need for the PuTTY trunk development is svn://ixion.tartarus.org/main/putty. So you could check out the trunk version of PuTTY using a command such as svn co svn://ixion.tartarus.org/main/putty.

To check out branches of the code, replace putty with the branch name (such as putty-branch-0.56). You can see what branches exist using the command svn ls svn://ixion.tartarus.org/main.

If your connection is not very fast (and or you are behind a dial up connection), you might consider a program that enables you to pause/resume the download. We've listed some popular download managers here.

To download the most current version of OpenOffice.org:

    1.

Display http://www.openoffice.org/,'>http://www.openoffice.org/, and click on the large green Download button displayed in the middle of the web page. This will display the downloads page.
    2. Do you see a blue box? Inside the blue box, the first drop down menu is prompting you to select your language. Click on the down arrow to the right of this drop down menu and select your language from the list.

For those languages where more than one mirror site is available you will be prompted to choose the operating system (platform). "Windows" is at the top of the list.

Choose a mirror (download location) closest to you.
    3. An interim page will be displayed with some information on how to contribute to the project and how to locate other resources, and seek support.

Click the "Continue to Download" button to proceed to download OpenOffice.org to your computer. You will be prompted by a dialog window as to where you want to place the download file on your computer. Note this down, as you will need to find it later to install OpenOffice.org on your computer.

Note: You may also want to copy the downloaded file to a backup medium (CD-ROM, ZIP disk, etc.).
    4. To check the integrity of the file that you have downloaded, please refer to the md5sums linked from the download page.

Unpack and install the downloaded OpenOffice.org 2.0 files

De-select (click on the ticks) to view, edit and print these file types with your existing word processing, spreadsheet or presentation program.

Note: If you change your mind, returning to the prior state is tedious. You will need to reassociate all word processing, spreadsheet or presentation files with the appropriate file type. To read more, please see the file associations FAQ on the OpenOffice.org web site.

You can use file types not associated with OpenOffice.org, by starting Openoffice.org then open the file by choosing Open from the File menu.

You are prompted to enter your name. This is used in the document properties, templates and when you record changes made to documents. This is useful if you are working on a document with others, but you don't need to complete this information in order to proceed. This information can also be entered later when using the program.
    6. Complete the form and click Next to display the Registration window.

You will need to be connected to the internet if you select "I want to register now" and click Finish. Your browser will display a welcome message on the OpenOffice.org web site and then redirect you to a user survey page.

If you are not connected to the internet, you can choose to register later.

Registration of OpenOffice.org and completion of the user survey is optional and is not required for you to ensure full use of OpenOffice.org.

Note: Registration of the OpenOffice.org programme is completely separate to subscribing to various OpenOffice.org mailing lists and registering yourself with the http://www.openoffice.org/ site to submit bugs, enhancement requests and contribute to projects.

You have successfully installed and run OpenOffice.org. You should now refer to the online help (Choose "OpenOffice.org Help" from the Help menu) or connect to the internet to obtain support from the http://www.openoffice.org/ web site by clicking the Support tab available from any web page.

Thank you for using OpenOffice.org, and welcome!
    Linux RPM-based Installation
    Prerequisites

If you want Java integration, you want to make sure you have the latest JRE installed. It should be at least JRE 1.4. You can find the JRE for Linux at the Java JRE for Linux download site. Alternatively, it might be included on the installation media of your distro as part of a complete Java development environment.
    Installation Steps

    1. Unpack the downloaded image into a directory. For example, currently, the following command would unpack into the current directory:
    2. tar xvzf OOo_2.0.4_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz
    3. su to root, if necessary.
    4. cd into the directory with the unpacked image. This could be RPMS.
    5. Delete any rpm files that do not apply to your system. For example, on a Fedora Core 3 system, delete any rpms specific to another distribution such as openofficeorg-suse-menus-1.9.79-1.noarch.rpm.
    6. Then execute rpm -Uvih *rpm.

Packages for Linux Distributions (Not compiled by OpenOffice.org staff)

Many Linux distributions now include a version of OpenOffice.org in their own native package manager format (.rpm, .deb, etc.). These packages have been built and are supported by the distributions' own teams, not by OpenOffice.org. Some distributions have strict policies around licensing, which means they have chosen to disable parts of OpenOffice.org which rely on software which does not meet their criteria (e.g. the Fedora rpms have disabled the parts of OpenOffice.org which require Java).

Note: Please check carefully before using a third-party build that it does actually include all the parts of OpenOffice.org that you will require. Replacing a 'native' distribution build with the full OpenOffice.org original build can be tricky, but can usually be successfully accomplished by completely removing the existing 'native' install.
Distributions providing 'native' (possibly customized) OpenOffice.org:

    * See OpenOffice.org in Debian for news of 2.0 and developer snapshots
    * Fedora Project
    * Mandriva Linux
    * OpenOffice.org for Slackware available from Linux Packages. Eugenio notified the webmaster and Bill has since reported on the [users]list that he installed the package from Linux Packages using pkgtool.

If you have news of other Linux distributions packaging OpenOffice.org 2.0 and developer snapshots, please let us know.
