  1. Blocking and preventing brute force attacks is one of the main things you want to do on your web server to add a layer of security. While someone might not be targeting your site or server specifically, they will have automated tools that will try to guess random usernames and passwords that are common against your system. They’re essentially forcing their way to user only authorized area’s of a system, such as FTP accounts, e-mail accounts, databases, script based administration areas and root or any shell access are most common attempts. They will try multiple login attempts, guessing usernames and passwords, trying to force their way onto your machine.

  4. Spy Sheriff is a system hijacker that causes popups to appear on your computer telling you that you have spyware installed (which you do!). Clicking on the alert brings you to a website which attempts to sell you a bogus spyware program called "Spy Sheriff".

In order to remove this infection we will need to use HijackThis to manually remove the infection:
    1. Print out these instructions as we will need to shutdown every window that is open later in the fix.
2.Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
    3. Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
    1. Install Ewido security suite
    2. Launch Ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    3. The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
    4. The program will now go to the main screen
    5. On the left hand side of the main screen click on Update
    6. Click on Start. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    4. After the updates are installed, exit Ewido
    5. Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.
    6. Once in Safe Mode, Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
    1. Click Options...
    2. Move the arrow down to Custom CleanUp!
    3. Put a check next to the following:
    Empty Recycle Bins
    Delete Cookies
    Delete Prefetch files
Scan local drives for temporary files
    Cleanup! All Users
    4. Click the OK button
    5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
    7. After Cleanup! is finished start Ewido Security Suite
    1. Click on scanner
    2. Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    Binder
    Crypter
    Archives
    3. Click on Start Scan
    4. Let the program scan the machine
    5. While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose clean, then put a check next to Perform action on all infections in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.
    8. When the scan is complete, exit the program and reboot back to normal mode.
    9. Click on Start, then Control Panel, and double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
    10. Uninstall the SpySheriff program and then exit Add/Remove Programs.
    11. Delete the following, in bold, if found:

    C:\Documents and Settings\user account\Start Menu\Programs\SpySheriff <-whole folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\user account\Application Data\Install.dat
    C:\Program Files\SpySheriff <-whole folder
    C:\Windows\Desktop.html
    C:\winstall.exe
    C:\Program Files\Daily Weather Forecast\

*NOTE* user account is not the actual name of that folder. The name of that folder will be the name of your computer profile.
    12. Download HijackThis and save it to your C:\ folder. Extract the hijackthis.zip file to c:\hijackthis. We will use this program later.
    13. Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HijackThis and press the Scan button. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [spySheriff] C:\Program Files\SpySheriff\SpySheriff.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Daily Weather Forecast] C:\Program Files\Daily Weather Forecast\weather.exe
    14. Close HiJackThis.
    15. RIGHT-CLICK HERE and go to Save As (in IE it's Save Target As) in order to download the smitfraud reg to your desktop.
    16. Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.
    17. After the merged successfully prompt, using Windows Explorer, navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Windows\Prefetch
    18. If there are any files inside the Prefetch folder, delete ALL of them. (Do NOT delete the folder. Just delete the files inside.)
    19. Reboot your computer.
    20. You should be able to change your desktop back to normal now.

Your computer should now be free of the SpySheriff infection.

  5. I have no quarrel with those who recommend using NOD and use the on-line scanners, Kaspersky and Bit Defender. However, I have never found the on-line scanners to find anything. I used Bit Defender for over a year, and now KAV 6. I have decided it is a waste of time to run scans with another AV.So unless one is realy "hung-up" on using both get the one that runs well on your machine and that you have confidence in. I trialed both NOD 32 and KAV 6. NOD is a superb AV, but in the end I preferred KAV. Others reach a different conclusion. The KAV 6 PDM showed great detection rates on AV Comparatives. I prefer to keep malware off my machine than try to find it later. In addition while NOD heuristics were the best on that AVC test, I do not find 58% especially comforting.Have a good day. Whichever AV one decides upon will give great protection.

  6. Hello everybody!!!I'm new to this list and to JavaScript too. As a freshman I'd like toknow if it's possible to solve the following problem:I have to access a page where there are some combo boxes with manyoptions and after choosing the right options I have to click on abutton to see the desired results (the combos' content is like afilter to a query). The result is a table of values and this table is generated in HTML (Isaw the page's source code). The page I want to access is a php page and I don't know if it usessome database for storage of values. My doubt is if with JavaScript I can do a script to automaticallyconnect to the site, choose all possible options inside all the comboboxes and execute the button to go to the next page where the resultsare shown. After that I'd like to store locally the table thatcontains all the values I need to do my job.I'm asking a solution to this problem because there are about almost athousand of options to choose and it's painful to do it by hand.

  7. I'm trying to build asp.net pages with an SQL Server backend. I am running into what I think is string limitations in SQLDataSource objects. But I could be wrong. And this could be the gridview doing this. I haven't tried anything else. I'm just learning. What is happening is when I include some columns from the data table in the sql of the SQLdatasource object it will no longer let me update records. I change the data and click update. It refreshes the page but the data doesn't change. The reason I was thinking it is a string length problem is because most of the colums that I can't include are dates that can be null or text columns where the column name is longer which addes a lot to the sql. I know I'll feel stupid when I find out that this was not the case but I've been testing this for days and this is the best I can do with my current knowledge.

  8. I get a security sandbox error in flash when i try and do a upload file or after closer investigation only when i try and type something in an input box through my upload function. I had this all working as you know previously.I am not sure why i get this. I don't get it when i browse for a file in my upload function but rather when i try and type something in on my input field text box for my "title" field.i have tried adding System.security.allowDomain("designercolin.com"); even inside my actionscript and that doesn't even seem to work.Any idea why it would be causing an error when i try and type in my input field. It doesn't even give me the error when i browse for a file to try and upload a file using my upload function. I thought it may have something to do with browsing first then adding the title so i tried adding a title first and i still get the "security sandbox" error.the exact error is below. It only happens when i type in the box.*** Security Sandbox Violation ***SecurityDomain 'http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; tried to access incompatible context 'file:///Macintosh%20HD/Users/colintoomey/Documents/classes/graduate%20work/thesis%20stuff/ispire%20app/ispire%20v1.026.swf'this error never happened before in previous versions of my upload script even with the input fields i had.I have tried it multiple times and sometimes i get the same security error with the same security domain file and other times i get a securitydomain with files get_boards.php or sometimes even a jpeg file. I can try it in many areas like in the search box input field and it will give me an issue with the get_boards.php file for security domain but other places i get other path locations.all my php files seem to load perfectly fine and i get no errors at all until i try and type something in any of the input boxes in my web app. What i have started to realize is that it has nothing to do paticular with the upload function but rather something with the input text boxes or something with local files and remote files although im not sure. I tried for instance in another part of my application that has a input box typing in that and i get the same security error. Basically anywhere i type in an input box is when i get the security error. What is a security sandbox error though and how do i solve it? Is it something in my php file or my actionscript? Im confused.

  9. Hi everyone,I'm writing because my attempts to find a coder to write a CP w/ Moderbill integration have failed. I've posted on multiple sites (Elance.com & Rentacoder.com) and I've not been able to find someone with experience in the area of writing a web based control panel for Ventrilo that's integrated with Modernbill v5.I've been in the Vent business for awhile and decided it was time for an custoer experience upgrade. If anyone has experience or can point me in the direction of some one who does, please visit this posting at Rentacoder.com so I can get this going.I'll check this posting for responses, or you can send me a private message if you prefer. Thanks for your help!

  10. Sure, and it be better if high-end computing servers were cheaper too, but really: a global plane based relatively high speed internetwork is not cheap to build and run: we're talking about fitting equipment into planes, trials and testing, satellite bandwidth, the cost of satellite services, etc. This is not inexpensive.I actually think $30 is not too bad for what you're getting. It's not for everyone, but it's within the reach of many people, considering many of us think nothing about easily spending $30 on a restaurant meal. Not only this, but international airlines are not actually loaded with revenue that they could absorb the cost of this service into existing price you pay, and really, I wouldn't want my mother (a non internet user) to pay higher trans-atlantic fares so that she can subsidise web browsers: user pays!I'm sure we'll see the service expand and improve in the future, but for now, it's a fairly decent start. I'm not on a 6 figure salary, yet I'd have no problems paying for this service on the 2-3 12+ hour flights I make per year.

  11. This could have happened to any mp3 headphones carrier. Any metal and copper wire extended along or near the body will work as an antenna. The lawnmover was the biggest conducter, but as it is, lighting does take the nearest point of entry when it comes down....is that not why lightning rods are at the top of buildings and structures?Message is, if you plug your ears, keep those eyes open for thunderclouds! This is common sense.Apple should sue him for slander. The lawnmover manufacturer too, if he even thinks about it.True story that golfers will appreciate: Lee Trevino was playing the iron 1, about to take the backswing, he was struck (by lightning). He survived and spoke the memorable words: You see, not even God can play an iron 1!
