    B.B.S

    A bulletin board system or BBS is a computer system running software that allows users to dial into the system over a phone line and, using a terminal program, perform functions such as downloading software and data, uploading data, playing games, reading news, and exchanging messages with other users. During their heyday (from the early 1980s to the mid 1990s), many BBSes were run as a hobby free of charge by the "SysOp" (system operator), while other BBSes charged their users a subscription fee for access.

    Help the Googlebot understand your web siteA list of recommendations.

    Right now I'd like to lock myself in a small padded room, froth at the mouth, and make menacing faces through barred windows at innocent passer-by. But my shrink says I should channel my anger into something productive.

    So let's talk about Google.

    Google is the best search engine on the 'net right now. The Googlebot is Google's indexing software. The Googlebot visits billions of web sites over time and records their contents, which makes them available to search. The Googlebot is very smart and works really well. But, like everyone, it could use a little help from its friends.

    When authoring a web site, keep in mind that the Googlebot is software, which means it has a set of capabilities and limitations and algorithms it uses to index content. There are lots of effective ways to trip up the Googlebot and make it impossible for it to index your content. Alternately, the Googlebot can index your site well, and then people will find it when searching for words it contains.

    As a web site author, there are a few simple things you can do to help the Googlebot understand your web site as fully as possible.

    Here's a list.**

    * Make every single page on your site accessible via a text-based link - as opposed to Javascript, Flash, DHTML, etc. The Googlebot only speaks text.
    [see #6 in Nine things you can do to make your web site better]
    * Keep the number of links on a given page less than 100.
    [see Google's Webmaster Guidelines]
    * Give every single page on the site a complete and meaningful <title>. Google offers the allintitle syntax, which lets users search only text that appears in a page title. There are over 3 million results returned for Untitled Document.
    * Avoid frames. Avoid frames like the plague.
    [see #3 in Nine things you can do to make your web site better]
    * Use URLs with query strings sparingly, if at all. When using dynamic URLs, like
    http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
    keep in mind that the shorter the list of query string parameters, the better.
    [see #5 in Nine things you can do to make your web site better]
    * Make sure that the title and alt tag attributes exist and are complete and meaningful in each page's markup. For example, the markup for that picture of your goldfish should be something like
    <img src="/imgs/goldie.jpg" alt="my beloved goldfish, Goldie" />
    * Make all relevant information on a page textual. Don't embed page content into images or objects like Flash movies. Did I mention the Googlebot only speaks text?
    [see #6 in Nine things you can do to make your web site better]
    * Make sure your web server supports the If-Modified-Since HTTP header. This feature allows your web server to tell Google whether your content has changed since the Googlebot last crawled your site. Supporting this feature saves you bandwidth and overhead.
    [Verbatim from Google's Webmaster Guidelines]
    * Use robots.txt and meta robots tags to show the Googlebot around your site. These standard mechanisms for directing well-behaved robots like the Googlebot will allow you to specify important things like whether or not Google will cache your page content and/or images, and whether or not the Googlebot will index content on pages that maybe you don't want available to the searching public.

    Webloggers: use the meta tags to help the Googlebot index only your permalinks, not your constantly changing front page. To do this, use
    <meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow" >
    on your front page and
    <meta name="robots" content="index,follow" >
    on your posts' permanent locations.
    [see #7 in Nine things you can do to make your web site better]
    * Use meaningful text inside your tags so the Googlebot can associate that text with that href link. Meaning, if I am going to link my pictures from the war protest, I should say "Take a look at my photos from the war protest" instead of "My war protest pictures are here." Now, Google doesn't explicitly recommend this. But I have a friend named Damion who has a weblog which I link with the word "Damion" on my Bookmarks list. If you do a Google search for the word Damion, this weblog is the third result. So what, you say? Well, Damion doesn't mention his name anywhere on his site.

    So don't use link text like read more or go here or download it or, God help us, click here. Don't click here.

    Webloggers: take heed of this when you display the permanent link for a post. You should link the title of a post which presumably contains words which indicate what the post is about instead of a [+] or the word permalink or, common amongst Blogger users, the date and time.
    * Include a
    <meta name="description" content="[insert your site's description here]">
    tag in your page header to summarize your site; even better, include descriptive text on the site's front page where users can actually read it, like, "Scribbling.net is a self-documentation project, occasionally interrupted by misdirected attempts at explaining the vaguely technical." This text will appear as the description for the site in Google results.
    * Forget <meta name="keywords"> ever existed. Really. It's meaningless.
    * Place more important content higher in the markup than less important content in a page.
    * Don't try to fool the Googlebot with hidden links or duplicate content or irrelevant pages of words . The Googlebot doesn't like being played. The Googlebot will make you sorry.

    Every few days Scribbling.net is ripe with new content, just waiting and wanting to be indexed and searched. Scribbling.net trembles with anticipation for it's weekly-or-so Googlebot visit, and when the big G arrives, let me tell you, it's like a well-choreographed dance. The Googlebot and Scribbling.net have all the elements of a healthy relationship: love, trust, respect, honesty and understanding. It's beautiful, really. Your site can know this kind of bliss too.

    ** Disclaimer: I'm no Google expert or employee, and I'm no SEO. As a matter of fact, SEOs who charge exorbitant amounts of money for "proprietary, secret" methods of upping your site's placement in Google results are thieves. There aren't secrets or tricks to any of this; my sources of information for this list of recommendations are the freely available Google Webmaster Guidelines and my own piddly server logs.

    Overview
    Windows Vista has many new features, such as an updated graphical user interface dubbed Aero, improved searching technology, a number of new security features, and completely redesigned networking, audio, print and display sub-systems. Vista also aims to increase the level of communication between machines on a home network using peer-to-peer technology, making it easy to share files, password settings, and digital media between computers and devices. For developers, Vista also has an entirely new development API, called WinFX, based on the .NET framework, which aims to make it significantly easier for developers to write high-quality applications than with WinFX's predecessor, Win32. The Enterprise edition of Vista is expected to include Microsoft's Virtual PC technology, so that line-of-business applications that are incompatible with Vista can still be used in a fashion similar to how Mac OS X's "Classic" mode supported older Macintosh applications.

    According to Jim Allchin, the co-President at Microsoft responsible for Windows Vista, there are over one thousand new features and technologies being introduced. In many ways, as Bill Gates has said, Windows Vista will be the broadest and biggest update since Windows 95, which was released twelve years prior to the expected release date of Vista.

    Microsoft's primary stated goal with Vista, however, has been to improve the state of security in the Windows operating system. Amongst the many common criticisms of Windows XP, the most significant has been its security vulnerabilities, and an overall susceptibility to malware, viruses and buffer overflows. In light of this, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates announced in early 2002 a company-wide Trustworthy Computing initiative which aims to incorporate security work into every aspect of software development at the company. This had the effect of significantly delaying the development of Vista, as Microsoft prioritized improving the security of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 above finishing the next version of the operating system.

  6. Notice from szupie:

    Google's AdSense program is probably the best affiliate program on the internet today. With it's content scanning algorithm to adjust advertising and the fact it takes in to account the users location as best as it can, it has proven to be one of the highest converting click through programs to date.
    In this article, I hope to help you maximize your revenue earning potential with Google's AdSense by teaching you about how to display your ads, creative effective ads, and how maximize your click through rates.

    Color Scheme

    There is a couple different ways to handle your advertising color schemes. Some webmasters believe that they should keep the advertising as low-key as possible, these webmasters normally make the background and border on the ads to the same as their website. Often they do this in hopes that the user will not realize it is an advertisement. The other thought is to try and use colors to draw the users eye and force them to look at the advertising. I've read quite a few websites that analyze colors in advertising and how people react to different colors, they believe by selecting certain colors you can influence the click rate. I personally run several sets of advertising on my website, and it has been my experience that more colorful advertising seems to convert better. However there is many more factors involved, such as location of the advertising.

    Location of AdSense Advertising

    Almost every webmaster will agree that you can maximize your revenue and click through rate by the location of your advertising. Google's AdSense website suggests that you keep your advertising, "above the fold." Above the fold, means it doesn't require the user to use their scroll bar to see the advertising.

    Keeping the advertising to the left of the page, such as in the navigation bar can also be a very important factor in converting those users. People read from left to right and you want the first thing they see to be your advertising.

    The final tip for article location is inline advertising, ones that are integrated in to lists, and content. Many websites have bulleted lists or link farms, with the Google AdSense advertisings at the top of that list. This can often fool the user in to thinking it is part of your list, but may anger some users. I personally like to put a block of advertising in the middle of my articles, or near the end, so the user must read around or beside the advertising. This makes it more noticeable, and much harder to ignore.

    Text or Graphical Advertising?

    AdSense offers you the ability to put graphical ads, text ads, or a mixture of the two. Graphical advertising in general seem to yield far worse click through rates, I believe that users are used to viewing banners for so many years, that it is ingrained in internet society just to ignore them now. AdSense seems to have far fewer advertisers using graphical ads also, which may lead to empty advertising space on your website, if a graphic can't be provided.

    Importance of Content

    Making money on AdSense can only be done with content. If you don't have quality content, you aren't going anywhere. When you post the AdSense advertising code on your website, when it is viewed, the Google MediaPartners bot comes to your website, scans the website, then creates advertisements based on the content it scanned. Content reigns supreme when it comes to AdSense, the better your content, the more it will pay off! If you can have an average page of 300-500 words with a very specific subject you are going to do well on AdSense, try to keep your subject very tight and don't expand on too many subjects on one single page. This will keep targeted advertising on your pages, which should convert far better for a user that is looking for a specific subject!

    Try to keep your articles under two pages in length, if you have longer articles, break them apart and make two pages. This will help by giving the website more advertising space, and hopefully if you have a user reading, twice the exposure!

    Keywords, Relevant and Targeted Advertising

    Sometimes no matter how hard you work at keeping a nice subject based article, you just can't get the keywords picked up for the kind of advertising you want to see. A prime example of this is with my own name! My name is Ken Dennis, often due to my last name, a page will return AdSense advertising about "Dennis the Menace" and though I am a bit of a menace, so are those kind of advertisings! There are two ways to handle advertising that doesn't match your content. The first way is to change your article, or add more keywords that will sway the advertisements in a different direction. The second way is to go in to the AdSense website and ban the websites that you don't want to see. Ad Filtering can be very helpful, and taking out ads you don't like or support can help increase your click through rates.

    Google AdSense Search Engine

    AdSense let's you install a Google search engine on your website, this allows users to search the world wide web, or just your website. This is an excellent way to help your users find the information they want inside your website, and it provides you with even more advertisings based on the keywords the search for. Even when they leave to do a search, all the advertisements if clicked are credited towards you! So not only does the search engine provide you with functionality, it provides you with one more revenue source, with targeted advertisements based on EXACTLY what the user searches for!

  7. I am currently using Norton Antivirus 2005 on my desktop computer along with Zonelabs Zone Alarm Firewall Pro which I did not purchase; I have a software for generating serials so it worked for me .It is working very fine but is using up most of my memory. Norton offers me live updates whenever I connect to the internet so I update virus definations and it is going on fine. If you are using Limewire there are high chances if viruses entering your system but never has my antivirus let me down though I use Limewire so much. Today it caught 3 Trojan Horses1 CyberWarrior.3172 Worms2 War32.system.CIf I did not have Antivirus my comp would be a breedind ground for viruses.Although I do not use any anti adware or spyware programs you can download Windows Defender which you can find on Google Search . 8. I have gotta problem, can anyone help me solving it, the pages of my site cannot b indexed by Google, beacause of current webhost (Tripod), can anyone help me get a free auto-site submitting software, that bombards the search engine with my URL, I also tried AutoAdd, can anyone suggest something else. :lol:

    Ganesh I think there are two ways of getting rid of this problem:
    Firstly : make your page pure.
    Secondly : try changing your host.
    What I mean by make your page pure is that remove the unwanted scripts that you have put to remove the forced tripod advertisements and remove the unwanted javascripts and also do not encript your page.
    Secondly : I feel the Tripod Server is not up to the mark and on my advise I feel you should change your host to may be Xisto ,they are quite reliable according to my experience and I feel that maybe by doing this you would be able to get indexed completely by Google.
    For more queries on this matter mail me at rohanramanath@gmail.com,
    Dean Solutions4u Enterprises and I will surely help you to my level best. :lol:

  9. This topic is one that can be debated on. Some webmasters say that it is not advisable to use WYSIWYG Editors as a beginner. They may have many reasons to do so . I feel we need not know any language.. I feel that knowing a programming language like H.T.M.L. (Hyper Text Markup Language) is not required to make a website of any caliber.I myself started designing my first website on a WYSIWYG Editor .In this you can design your page like you are drawing on paper and it will automatically get decoded into H.T.M.L, you can then sit and study the coding and analyse asto what work each code does. The WYSIWYG Editors that I would recomend are Microsoft Frontpage and Macromedia Dreamweaver. These software in colaboraton with other softwares like Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Fireworks and even Microsoft Paint can be used to design ultimate webpages.After creating this basic part of a webpage extra-ordinary effects can be added by using programming languages like Javascripts, PHP, ASP, CSS and many more...The same way like HTML need not be learnt to make websites so are Javascripts and the other above mentioned languages. Ready made scripts of these languages are available for free in many websites like :http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ many more search results can be found on Google. At thefreesite.com any begginer will get all the features that are required for his/her website.Also : additional features like guest book, site search, and member's area are also available on various websites like http://www.bravenet.com/ and the like. Now let me tell you the importance of know all the above mentioned programming languages .Firstly, it increases your knowledge on programming .Secondly, it lets you be independent : you need not depend on other sites for various features.Thirdly, it lets your site be free from the forced adds that are put by the websites who privide you with this feature. And even if they put adds for other features you can remove it by HTML commands.Forthly, it lets you to design it according to your means and fancies instead of choosing from one of their pre-designed templates.The disadvantage is that you spend more time learning instead of designing your website. I have explained to you the advantages and disadvantages of knowing programming languages. For more queries on this issue you can e-mail me at rohanramanath@gmail.comFor your information, I am the Dean of Solutions4u and am presently re-designing my site. :lol: Rohan Ramanath ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I would advise you to learn HTML and then your site will rock. Your site will be more detailed as you can give commands to even blend colours. You should know some basic commands like:<a> - Hyperlink<HTML> - Start of a page<BR> - Break Line<FONT> - Font size and style<H1> - Header size<IMG SCR = " "> - To insert an image<P> - Paragraph<TABLE> - Table<TD> - Cell<TH> - Table Header<TR> Table Row<HEAD> - Heading<FORM> - to create a form<META> - Meta tags
