Is Your Internet Speed Good Enough Vs. Cost ?
ram130 replied to Cookiemonster1405241499's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Well it seems like you all are better off than I.Well here in Jamaica, the prices arent has outragious as you may have thought or conclude. And within a few months its about to get even lower. You see we have one landline service provider, which is Cable & Wireless Jamaica(http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/). They also provide our mobile services along with there competitor Digicel Jamaica. These two, have so far been ok(*not good). Now theres a reason why I mention Digicel Jamaica; which provides only mobile services. Its because they also provide internet access(not via landlinebut mobile as a modem). The current prices for ADSL via Cable & Wireless Jamaica are as follows: 128 down / 64 UP US$29.99256 down /128 UP US$39.99512 down /128 UP US$49.99768 down/256 UP US$59.991024 down/512 UP US$69.99Yea I know pricey huh? lolAny how Im using Digicel Jamaica & Cable Wireless Jamaica's internet via wireless or phone as a modem. Digicel charges 25c/kb but I get on for FREE via my own method so its free internet for me. C&W J charges $15/day.Now there is a new telecommunications provider thats also most completed there infrastructure work in Jamaica, called FLOW. They will offer us cable services(TV), internet services and landline services also. There internet service will be far faster and cheaper when compared with C&WJ. There starting package(128kbps) will be about $10 US! Which is really cheap considering, there speeds are also great, there maxium for residential will be 8MBps(10MBps for business) down and 2MBps UP. All with there fibre optic network. They also wil offer a service called Flow High-Speed VLAN Service Which is a High capacity fibre connectivity between multiple locations is provided through our Metro Ethernet network. This service is ideally suited for the transport of voice, data and video between multiple locations within Jamaica. Capacities range from 1 Mb to 1 Gb.I guess Jamaica isnt too bad after all in terms of internet and telecommunications for a small island. LMAOSo what do you guys think? -
Thanks so far, I feel like I deserted my post, but no. I was busy with SBAs for school lately so I'm sorry for taking so long to a reply. Ok for one, my WAP(GPRS its also called) is FREE, no matter what network I use here in Jamaica, its the same method to get on free with all of them(umm kinda ). The costs are too high, down here they charge(10-25c*) per kilobyte you download, its costly yes. But on one other network down here(with enough sense to be competitive) is charging a straight up flat rate($3 a day & $15 for when you use your phone as a modem). I'm using my phone as a modem right now, for free, the speeds are great(faster than dial up) and when they release EDGE it will be DSL speeds for me for free! Anyway back on point, theres a WAP forum(krapwap.com on your phone) that has graphics on it, but its small and does not charge alot to your credit. For the IPB scprit thing, will I be able to control posts, ban people, be a ADMIN in gerneral? Ram *Prices quoted in Jamaican currency

I'm not sure if this is the right section for this so please alert me or redirect this post to the right section. I own a wap site that is visited my nearly everyone in my country on a daily basis. What I would like to know is if its posible to put up a FORUM section on it and host it on Xisto, also is the WAP forum a Sql type? i'm kinda new to this stuff, btw, the wap site is in php3 but i'm gonna use wml and upload it to ASTA for hosting because my other(use to be) server is advertising on my site.Is there a free(good) wap site forum availabe out there that i can use for my WAP site? and have ASTA host it.I await your reply,Ram

Microsoft's Memo To It's Indian Staff - Hilarious
ram130 replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Software
Thats was good ..microsoft sure is heated about little words like that, they should have got a letter from Jamaica, where our words from the translation are more blunt. I'm curious though, does microsoft really think indians are going to adhere to that? -
When your tweaking your internet settings to get a faster speed or to get the most out of you connection, you have certain options that you tweak. Like TTL, MTU, etc.. Now the MTU(Maximum Transmission Unit) for the most part seems to have a great effect on the speed of your internet connection from my experience. For different connection types, the MTU value varies, like for example: Dial Up the MTU would be 572 bytes, DSL(this depends) 1472/1500. Now, I'm using my phone as a wireless modem via GPRS and I get speeds antithetical to dial up and ISDN. So far what I've gather is with playing with the MTU size is that it works best at 1500 for my connection(no errors) and GSM network(lets call them C&W) but download speeds are always fluctuating. When i switch to my other GSM network(Digicel), I get unfluctuated speeds, which is great and the MTU the same as before(1500). But when I look at the connection status this time, after about 2hrs of downloading, streaming and surfing the net, there are errors( like 20) yet while doing those things, I notice minor problems( like time outs). Now before i had switched, I had set the MTU to 1472, from which i got a very stable download speed, but it was slower than before. So i'm left with the theory that the 1500 MTU set for this network(Digicel) is too small and i'm wondering, is it possible to set it above 1500 bytes?

I doubt that, it depends really. I recently try and was successful in connection to my High School's Wifi network, they are on a 1Mbit/sec internet connection. So far only the library is Wifi connected to main tower and the IT lab wired to the library for internet. The PSP had trouble getting a good signal which meant hardly any connects. But once it connected it was surfting at dial up speeds, i guess this is due to the low signal pick up(only 15%) which i thought was weird at first and said maybe the schools using the web, but no its morning, the IT Lab & library are closed, so its due to signal strength( guess the low signal pick up is because of the limit Wifi power consumption the PSP has). So i asked my friend to try his laptop in the same area, it got a strong signal and connected right away. The speeds were amazing, we got about 89% of the school's internet connection speed. So to conclude the psp has a weak signal, in other words its doubt full that it will slow that computer's internet connection down, only a little bit, unless its dial up connection your using. You should elaborate more, so we can get a greater understanding of what your trying to do.

ok so far i have not take a look at Msn Maps yet. But so far it sounds like msn maps won't be in business too long, why would they even bother to try this? I mean google maps are so far the leaders, doesnt msn know they can't compete. Then again, whats in for them anyhow?
