I have had similiar problems on a fairly new CD-RW but was installed on a 5+yr old COMPAQ Desktop (7998). Originally I thought the CD-RW had gone to "CD-HEAVEN". I had been giving the CD-RW a workout the past few days burning about 150+ cds. It then started to crap out and copy one or two and not copy at all. Fortunately I had another desktop so I used it. A few weeks later a buddy came over and one thing let to another and I told him about my CD-RW problem. He opened up the box and LO and BEHOLD, it was covered in fine dust balls, etc. He took out the drives, fans, everything and with a small vaccum either sucked or blew everything. Put everythiing back together and the CD-RW worked and hs continued to work since. SO OPEN UP YOUR BOX AND GIVE IT A THOROUGH CLEANING.

I find this humours because to the uninformed Windows is really trying to emulate UNIX. Bill Gates basically changed the command names to make it easier for the masses to learn but were pretty much all UNIX commands. Instead for "grep" he used "find" for example. The thing that Unix always had way above WINDOWS was its ability to muli-task and its distributed platfrom using NFS (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/). That is Bill Gates goal, to surpass Unix in these areas and although close it is still 2nd. Unix makes, IMO, partitioning so much easier than Windows and you have the flexibility to add more disks and increase SWAP and fine tune your system by choosing the right sized partitions and/or dedicate servers for APPS, WEB, DATA (Oracle for example), loadbalancing and just limitless expansion if you have deep pockets. With the advent of WINDOWS popularity, Sun had was way behind in completing with Exel, OutLook, Word, etc., so companies created software to emulate a Windows envirnoment on a Unix box. We used WinCenter (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) to export to our Sun Unix boxes. So Windows does have its foothold in the entire industry but it is by far the best for everyone. It just depends on the users needs. Unfortunately, IMO, most users are not adequately infomed about the true value of Unix and most of them have no need for it if they are only going to surf the net, donwload MP3's, porn, and Email. I was doing downloading of software back in the day using Unix to login to a Archie server and ftp stuff and ALL done manually. 96% (my guess) of today's users would not have clue what a Archie server is/was. But we were sufring the net with MOSAIC later on and manually coding all our own HTML. Today the majority of 8th graders can create webpages without knowing HMTL. I am a believer that you need to learn how to drive a "stick shift" (manual) before you learn to drive an automactic. Just my "ten cents" worth and I got a little carried away but i needed to illustrate my points by just not saying "it is the best" or making one sentence statements without explanations or clarifications.

I have always tried to refrain from making broad statements such as "the best" of whatever because what might be the best for you is not necessarlly the best for everyone. Our group was manadated to only use standard UNIX tools such as VI and to use TROFF and NROFF to publish any and all Engineering notes in our Sun Unix enviornment that I managed. Eventually as we got younger grads, the requested EMACS, etc., we liked ELM for email and the incoming group wanted PINE, at the end, whatever tool enabled you to make your job easier was implemented. When the GNU type of programs came alot of the "older" Unix ppl resented it but at the end even our District Manager had me order all the new C++ progams for WINDOWS so he could program on his laptop. So the best of anything is not static, it changes and alot of times for the best.

I was spoiled using SOLAAIS because we use Sun Microsystems hardware, ie., Sparc 5's, 10's, 20's and the 450 serviers, etc., and our programmers did not have problems compiling as long as their code was good. There are quiet a few compilers out there but since $$$'s was really never an issue in our group, we brougth the best and/or also used the free GNU compliters and they all seemed to work when proplerly configured.

Hi Rachel...this is my time here as well. As a caution, it is never a good idea to post up information such as you did. One has to be very cautious about revealing information about your children's names and ages. I hate to "pour water" on your great idea, but unless your site can only be accessed by username and password or some other form of security, I would have to post too much pertinent information. I thoroughly enjoyed learning and working with Unix and Sun Microsystems servers. It helped me get some killer paying jobs for start ups as a Unix Technical Support Engineer. I worked at two of DataCenter headquarters working the 3rd shift (7PM-7AM). It has been 3 years almost and boy, you sure forget a lot. I am very rusty but if I were to immerse myself back into Unix, it would all come back.
