People who are already hosted what do you think of astahost?
minnieadkins replied to gritto's topic in Web Hosting Support
I was hosted for awhile, and I thought it was a pretty good place to be hosted. At first, when my account wasn't too active, but I did keep up my credits, I noticed that my site was down a lot. After uploading a template and a few webpages up, I noticed a great deal of more "uptime". I don't know if Xisto was upgrading or it was because of inactivity issues on my account, but it was a good experience overrall while I was hosted. -
Thanks for the quick replyIn response, yes I did keep my credits up, there at one point I think I had like 20 credits built up for about a month or so. Then gradually as I said before, I wasn't able to post, and then I wasn't able to post at all. The last time I knew it was at like -30 credits. Then I logged back on to start accumulating some credits and I was at zero. I know it's not much to make a post a day but i just wasn't able to. Xisto has 2 seperate sections (from what i read) they have a service such as that of Xisto and a free service. The free service has ads and does not require hosting credits. Xisto.com is the credit system hosting and Xisto.net is the free hosting. I have an account at cogia that I might end up falling back on for testing purposes, but I'm getting DSL and I would be able to access the internet more frequently so I decided to get this account back up to par. I love Xisto, it's great and by far the best hosting value on the net.

I've been hosted on here twice now, and after getting involved with 3 par time jobs and going to college full time, I was unable to continue posting to keep my credits high enough. After logging in I noticed that my account must have expired/been deleted. I was wondering if I had to re-register for the package, because after obtaining 4 positive credits, my account did not get 'un-suspended'. Another question, I noticed that Xisto.net is suppose to be a free hosting service with ads. That would be sufficient in my case as I'm just testing pages, but I can't seem to find where to sign up for it at.

I agree, just take the pc and use it for storage, or upgrade it a little and put a few games on it. It's always good to have a few computers around if anyone comes over and you want to lan party or something. That is if you don't have hi-speed like me . As far as upgrading it however, like posted earlier you probably won't be able to get a whole lot out of it, but an extra cd drive or cd/rw drive and modem/ethernet card can always come in handy. Parts are always great to have.

Violent Games 'affect Behaviour' Witchhunt Time
minnieadkins replied to ccb_v2's topic in Computer Gaming
I think that this will continue to be a debate for years to come. Many things can contribute to someone committing a crime, but all in all it comes down to will power. I think a game could have an effect on someone, but that person probably let it. Anyone with enough will power to distinguish fiction from reality could easily see a video game as fiction/entertainment. Television, sporting events, music, etc all those things can be associated with crime. Kobe Bryants and the Vikings cases for example, i'm sure everyone knows that you can't just do those types of things without consequences. Television has a mass amount of violence, and the lyrics in music these days. Anyone listen to emenim or 50 cent knows what I'm talking about (it's not just rap tho). Video games are a form of entertainment, and any form of entertainment can affect people, but understanding that it is fiction is determined by the individual. -
Jeez a 7900. I'm stuck with a 4800 SE lol. Poor me, I've been in the market for a new vid card for awhile, but $200 + is too much for my blood. Maybe some of these other cards will go down in value after this release. I've been looking at the 6800 series, I would go higher but I don't have a PCI Express slot on my motherboard. I have a decent computer, but I guess there's nothing I can do other than replace the motherboard in order to get the best/latest. Are there any way to add a PCI slot to an existing Motherboard. I read somewhere where you could take a PCI Express and make it like 4 regular PCI slots.

There's never much action in here. Here's a question for all you php guys out there. Here's what I want. Let's say I create a simple administration menu for someone to Add/Edit/Delete a record/item from a database. Now in the add function, let's say I want to store a URL to a image. Rather than having to go in and FTP that image up on the server, how could a person create a 'Browse' button and find that image on your harddrive, then create a script to upload the image to the server?Just wondering how to do it, or if it could be done easily. I assume it would be a fairly simple process, but I've never attempted it, and I figured someone out there has. Let me know what are your thoughts and past experiences.

Lol I typed out an entire example, but then accidently hit a button and it erased the whole thing. I'll just redirect you to a link this time, next time i'll use notepad or something then paste it. http://www.tizag.com/sqlTutorial/sqlupdate.php Yes you can use Update to alter current records in your database. That link should clear up how to use the UPDATE clause. As far as creating a from to do alter a record you'll need these pages/scripts: 1.) Script to select all records from database to be used in #2 2.) Form with select list (or text your choice, but select is usually better) to display all the records from your table. The select options usually have the primary key assigned to their 'VALUE' attribute and the name is usually being displayed. 3.) Script to select all fields you want modified by using the selected value in #2 (should be the primary key) so that it can be used in #4 4.) Form to display current values into fields to be edited (remember not to let admin/user edit primary keys or other fields that shouldn't be altered unless needed) 5.) On submiting #4 a script to update the entries as the admin/user wants That's the basic way, in my opinion of doing it. It can be done within 1 form page and 1 script page ( or one page entirely) depends on how you like to code. Much simplier to have 2 form pages and place the scripts at the beginning of the form, then on the last form have a script to update, then redirect with a php HEADER. If you want I could code up a simple example and post it on here, hope this helps, and I hope I understood what you wanted.

I think that most languages are fairly simple to grasp, especially the basics. The more advanced topic, then obviously the more time will be spent learning them. I think c++ (basic) syntax isn't too hard to grasp. As far as logic, most logic applies to almost any language. I haven't personally tried Java, but there was a guy in my C++ class that had taken a semester of it in college, and he said it was very similiar. I will probably read a few tuts and eventually give it a go. Hopefully I become a little more involved with programming. I just can't seem to get to the GUI appz. Most of mine are still command line. Does java provide a nice interface for the users of the app?

I guess he did it just to be doing it. That's pretty nifty though, considering I've never overclocked anything. Is it very hard to overclock your cpu? I heard ATI cards had a built-in overclock feature with their video cards. I thought that was kind of a neat feature. Is it just changing jumpers or something?

Where Can I Learn Html Codes ? html codes
minnieadkins replied to evanthis's topic in Websites and Web Designing
If you browse around and search through some of the previous topics you'll find lots of links that will help you learn some HTML. I recommend http://www.htmlgoodies.com/ for a beginner. It offers HTML and then gets into advanced topics such as CSS, Javascript, PHP, and SQL. -
Alienware Opens Retail Store Alienware opens retail store
minnieadkins replied to Harry1984a's topic in Software
Unless someone is "loaded" or perhaps wealthy enough to afford these things, i dont' see why most people don't have their computer built. It costs much less, from what I hear, to have your computer built to replicate an alienware machine, rather than to buy one. Most gamers are into video cards and such, and now more and more people are into hardware. I'd love to build a new computer if I could afford the parts. That'd be better for me than getting an Alienware pc.Anyways good for alienware. Mail-order took off for them, and I'm sure they'll have success with retail now that they've proven themselves on the market. -
I've played the sims 2, it was alright. It's too much like the Sims (duh) lol. I got bored very quickly. I remember spending hours upon hours playing the original. The second one was nice, but just wasn't a new experience. I would like to try some of the expansion packs, perhaps I will venture into the world of the Sims soon.

Well as far as FPS that would be hands down Halo 2. Is GTA even a FPS? I've played halo 1 and truthfully it was alright. Multiplayer was kinda nice, but I found myself bored through most of it. I'm use to fast action fps games such as Quake 3. I can't get enough of the multiplayer from that game still. GTA is a great all around game to just mess around in. Halo 2 is the game that you want to become the best at and kill your friends...etc. Depends on what you prefer more. I probably would go for halo 2 b/c you can always have something to do in there, GTA would eventually end.

Hl2 Halo2 Doom3? which one do you think is the best?
minnieadkins replied to Killer008r's topic in Computer Gaming
I've played half-life 1, and halo 1. I have played doom 3 however, and it was alright. The graphics were impressive, and it wasn't very bad gameplay. Multiplayer was lacking, and after you beat the game there's really not much left, other than toss it back into the shelf. I've heard good things about half-life 2, and for those of you who haven't tried it, I think (from heresay) that's what'd i would try first. I wasn't a big fan of HL1 but, that was awhile ago. Maybe I should replay it . -
Starcraft has my vote, but diablo was great. Can't wait until blizzard does a diablo 3, if they do. It'll be something to look into. WoW looks promising, but my comp specs and $$ status can't handle it. Maybe when I get hi-speed I'll be able to try it out. Sounds interesting as well, but I hear it occupy's a great portion of your life lol.

I use to love warcraft 2. Then I played starcraft and it absolutely blew me away. I don't even think warcraft 3 stands up to it. Diablo was always a game that I could go back to anytime, as well as diablo 2. It seems that blizzard has had some time trying to get their company together. Then blizzard north came around. Blizzard split or something didn't they? I can see where it takes awhile to develop a game. They do however get our hopes up. I was playing a game here while back, and it said starcraft:ghost would be released either early this year or late last year. Lol, I can wait though. Their release dates are always off it seems, but it does live up to the hype usually. Hope they can keep it up.

My professor is designing a website that uses bit-flag checking to allow access to certain pages. You login, validate login, and store their allowed bit flag into a session variable. Then you compare to see if they have access or not. It's fairly new to me, but it's apparently very common with linux users. Sounds interesting to me, just wondering if any one has used this, or is it a little too much for simple pages. His site however is going to be more of "software" for several users. Is it very secure and does it work well?

Bnbrown's Questions: Html, Css, Jsc, Ftp Etc.
minnieadkins replied to bnbrown's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Tip: If you can't get 25 words out of a post, then usually it's irrelevent. Basically if you're going to say "I agree" or "That sounds cool", then just don't. If you're worried about how many words, fire up word and copy and paste your post after you do a word count. Most usually tho, you'll be able to reach the 25 word mark as long as you give a post some thought. That post should not have ever happened. Wait until you try it, then post your results, and the "thanks, why spam?" That way there was something that everyone can get out of the post. (the result of the previous post..did it work or not?) Refer to the rules and you'll find it to be a helpful resource for all your questions. -
Lol, I agree. Amazing technologies. I read in a newspaper that in Japan it's not uncommon to have connections that connect at 100 mb/s. I'm still on dial-up. Can't wait to get cable/dsl or something equivalent. I'm looking forward to adapating to the new age. Too bad when I finally get broadband VDSL will prob be out, lol. Then I'll be obsolete yet again. BTW, electric internet looks promising.

I got my computer from cyberpowerinc. P4 2.6 with windows xp sp2. I want to partition it soon and install some sort of linux so I can get fairly adapted to its environment. So far it's been a fairly good experience with this computer. Before this i had a computer from Micron that ran windows 98 sp1 w/ a 450mhz p2.

Happy Bithday Windows 25 april 1985
minnieadkins replied to darkool's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I remember using dos for almost everything. I loved it, then windows came along and I guess it was alright. Or so I thought. Now it makes everything so simple. I went out and bought Windows 95 because one of my friends had it, and I remember that's when "wallpapers" really took off. Note: It's just 20 years old, as mentioned on the previous pages -
Creating A Simple But Effective Website Part 1 - Design
minnieadkins replied to twitch's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Some of those tips are pretty useful, but maybe you should have included them in a code block or something. I'd say a mod will work with it. Anyways, the whole topic is obviously directed toward a WYSIWYG approach. I started using netscape's built in web design program and I personally think that I started on the wrong path. In dreamweaver, when you said make a new rectangle does that make a new division? What exactly can dreamweaver do? I know it can be useful to code some meaningless and repititious stuff. I recommend looking into basic templates involving css. http://www.ssi-developer.net/main/templates/3col.shtml Look at some of those layouts and some of the code to get a good idea of a what most users expect of a website. -
C++ Or C#: Which Is New? Which One Should I Learn? Which?
minnieadkins replied to fabeschan's topic in Programming
It seems that the way to go is learning c++ and java. Both are used on a regular basis, and both have proven themselves. I know a little c++ and I have found it to be very useful. Java, as most people say, is very much like c++, but maybe a little easier to learn and use. I say take your choice between these two.
