Hi Guys,Well, it seems a lot of the rules would need to be updated and just knowing where they currently stand would be good.Due to my long absence, the rules of this board have really faded into the background for me but more so, are they as relevant as they were when we first wrote them in stone. Stone erodes over time, so can the rules. So what would you guys recommend? Any problems you can see with allowing links in the shoutbox. My views is that I am fine with links in the shoutbox, from what I've seen in the shouts over a long period of time, they have been used just to help explain idle chit chat. I haven't seen any abuse of it yet, but I haven't gone through all the shouts yet either, so I could find something that may change my views but also, the moderators didn't have any control over fixing this so if there was problems, how were they solved in that case? There maybe a more SEO reason for not having links in the shoutbox, and that is when spiders are here. Because the shoutbox is placed highly near the top of the page, it's content is actually some of the first things that will be seen by the spiders and links here can make those crawlers go else where without fully going through our site. It probably does not do that, but it could, so to ensure we keep them here on our site the links would have to be only links within this site. Probably links to help people find where the rules, etc are.In whatever way we go, I don't mind. Xisto is depressing to see in it's current state, all the wild activity is now that of only spam. Very few members that I've actually seen online. Not many legit registrations and even if they do make it through, not very convincing with their posts whether they are real or not.We can always rewrite the rules many times to suit Xisto but it's best to have it right from the start and update over long periods of time, especially if the problems we are having is due to missing features at the moment.Cheers,MC

OK,I have gone over the history of the shoutbox from when it was reimplemented, since the information prior to that seems to be gone or I just haven't looked for it properly.Out of all the shouts, only 1 spammed link. So that's quite fine.Somethings I picked out of the shouts that could be attended to, if they haven't already been: (Remember these are shouts and only little detail of what they are suggesting, but you should understand it better than me)"unapprove all posts"The server at plugins.astahost.commaking the posting by guests a little tightened upSince no one develops plugins & extensions anymore.. I think OpaQue can simply remove the section in its entirety.A link I followed in the shout:1) disable guests2) better capthca on registration3) auto-close all posts which are older than 2-3 months4) Posting URLs is not allowed in the first x days after registration + you need at least 5-10 posts without URLs ...And just for my own reasons:Improve the search function. There was also suggestions about the spam level, and I've reduced the registered members spam (if not completely eliminated them), it's now only Guests that need to be tackled. So, starting with the top. Unapprove all posts, what was this feature in IPB, how does it work? Maybe it's back now? If not, maybe I can bring it back but I need more understanding of it.The server plugins.astahost.com, also related to Since no one develops plugins & extensions anymore.. I think OpaQue can simply remove the section in its entirety. So am I to remove this, or should I develop plugins and extensions for this site so we have it back? I don't mind doing that, I know M^E did a lot of work for this but I also know that the old server no longer exists. Right now, I can remove this thread completely, or just hide it from the general public and if we do want plugins and extensions, especially mod/admin extensions would help us but also extensions to help with searching, posting, whatever we see fit.Tightening up the Guests, which also relates to all the spam work I've been working on reducing spam and also the link I followed in the shout. Disabling Guests can be easily done but I would prefer not to do this, I would like to improve on the spam protection there, by adding another level of assurance that the poster is not a bot. However, these fixes require modifying IPB code itself, and I have no capabilities in doing that at the moment on this server. Until improvements can be made on Guests verification, it maybe a good idea to just disable it till such time.Auto-closing posts, I'm against. I'm not against raising posts from the dead either. You have to realise that certain keywords used in search engines gave those users our page, which means it's quite high ranking and worth bringing back to the top again. History still is valid now, as it was back then. If we bury the past, those pages will no longer see the light and may as well have been completely removed to save space rather than just closed so no one can post to them. Especially if the information was incorrect and someone actually had the right answer to give, even if years had passed by. That way we have a historical reference of all events that took place in that post.Preventing links in the first couple of days, etc. Again, I'm not for this, if we are required to cite where information comes from, this has to be possible. I know this is more against spam but no need to prevent our honest members, spam already makes it harder on them now with validating captcha. So, the issue is fix the spam problem, not make it harder on our members.Improve the search function, this is my own gripe, however it's probably something that has to be modified in IPB code, which I don't have access to doing. So, this again is something that'll be left as is but I would like to see an improvement in that area.Sorry for the poor grammatical english, this is just straight information from my head without time to process any of it.Cheers,MC

Just some updates. the angry emote I have fixed.I have hidden the plugins and extensions board from everyone except the mods/admins, based on similar settings as the staff section. I won't remove it as yet.Cheers,MC

Hi, MC

Due to my long absence, the rules of this board have really faded into the background for me but more so, are they as relevant as they were when we first wrote them in stone. Stone erodes over time, so can the rules

I think that, besides the spam thing, the main rule should remain. In my opinion, the main rule is "no copied text here".
Copied text is text already written somewhere else.
If you wrote something yesterday in another website, don't post it here, or use the quote tags.
If you want some text to be published in two different places, first post it at Xisto, and then post it somewhere else between quote tags mentioning the Xisto original link.
We had a lot of polemics around that, people saying "it's my text, I'm allowed to put it also here", the rule must be clear, if you are the owner of a website you cannot copy your private blog text in a Xisto topic. If you already posted in another forum, don't post the text here, or properly quote it.

No copied text I defintely agree to.

If you want some text to be published in two different places, first post it at Xisto, and then post it somewhere else between quote tags mentioning the Xisto original link.

I like that rule, anything that will help bring traffic here.

Cheers,

MC
