No More Topics With Zero Replies

Recommended Posts

Topics with large number of replies and views tell you something about the forum. That could be how knowledgeable the contributors are in that particular topic or what they are interested in. That also could tell you how cooperative the members of that forum are.But what about topics with zero replies? Topics that are written by members of good reputation who I have no doubts about the good quality of what they write and have over 100 views but with zero replies. What I'm suggesting is that we shouldn't leave topics unanswered for long. If the topic is written by a member who is seeking a solution for a certain problem then someone with good knowledge should give a solution. If the topic is written by a new member it will make a big difference if someone gives a kind of supportive feedback to encourage the new member to write more.Action: Assign roles to senior members according to their interests and skills to follow up on forums assigned to them and make sure that there are no topics with zero replies.

A lot of things you're responding to are also very, very old. A majority of them have updated (answered) threads or are so old that the information found within is obsolete anyways.I can see this being a good thing to start for more recent topics, but resurrecting topics from 2005 and prior just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Hi!I don't really know if it is possible for every topic to have a reply because some of them are tutorials. You would not normally expect a reply for a How-To if it was really good, and you would not really want to have a lot of Thank You replies because they do not add value and that is what the Up-Vote button is for in the forum. Sure, a thank you seems like a more personal message and it is promoted on other forums, but it makes it harder for somebody who comes back to the forum later to browse through pages and pages of posts to find what he or she is looking for. You may be able to turn an up-vote into a thank you and list the people who posted the thank you through the up-vote button by adding on a plugin to the forum, but that is more about the workings of the forum rather than about the content within. Also, perhaps the up-vote should be positioned differently because I do not really notice any posts that have up-votes on them. Also, if there are some really old posts, we do not want all of the re-surfacing, particularly if it is about something less significant, like Al Gore's campaign agenda way back during the elections because in general people no longer have any interest in the political past. It could be relevant if there are a lot of people on the forum with an interest in political history though, so what deserves to be brought back from the past depends on the members and their interests. A lot of people on the forum have an interest in web design and web programming, but we do not really find much of a mention on here. Perhaps that gets discussed on Xisto, the sister-forum of Xisto. BTW, there is a lot of techie stuff going on in there, so if you do want to check out the issues that programmers and system administrators face, that's a good place to discover the issues and perhaps write a blog about it.Oh, and did I mention that the make money online forum could get outdated quickly with the number of firms going out of business each year? With that logic, resurrecting old post topics that are from about a decade ago about schemes and organizations that no longer exist would not have much value, unless it is for analyzing their strategies in retrospect.

Thank you all for your input. I agree with all what you brought up. It seems to me a kind of furum cultural difference. I'm coming from more interactive background, that's not to say you're not.

Anyway, that's the good thing about making mistakes; you learn from them. Now I I knwo about necroposting which I didn't hear of before. Now let's agree on these little things:

Necroposting is inot allowed and it should be highlighted somewhere in the rules for the new comers

Old topics should be locked at some point of time, if not removed

The voting replaces the casual short thank you post

Any post that asks for help or with an explicit question should be answered by an expert in the field (sounds like more work for the moderators :) )

I completely agree with most of those. I'm actually not sure why the older topics aren't automatically closed (even if it's only done in certain categories). Locking them would be greatly beneficial though.

One concern I have, though, is regarding "experts" having to respond. A lot of us have knowledge spanning across different skillsets, but aren't experts in any (or are but only in a couple).

Actually, it's pretty easy to respond to a very old post and not even realize you've done it until it's too late. Many of the forums have very old posts just a few subject lines down from the top. In some forums, if you removed all the old posts there wouldn't be much of anything left. We really didn't have this problem as bad when I first joined up here, but the last year things have really slowed down and there aren't a lot of new subjects started to join in on. So sometimes you have to rehash old ones when there's nothing else to talk about.

Yeah, this has been a big problem for me. There's only so much a small group of people can come up with content-wise. The lack of population makes it harder to find things to respond to, and greatly limits the responses to threads you create. I think that ends up pushing people away (seeing a forum of mostly old stuff) which just makes the situation worse.

And our little group of posters gets smaller and smaller. I think we get more spam topics now a days than we do legitimate posts from members here. Use to be if I just stayed away a couple days when I logged back in there were several posts I could respond too, but now I can stay gone 2 weeks and there's nothing new.

ok i withdraw my comment my friend, keep up the work.

the only thing is though it always pops up again but you have to expect that on online communities spammers just can not help themselves.

sorry if i offended you or insulted you my friend.
