Internet Explorer 9 Beta Is Out - Latest Acid Test Results

Well, Internet explorer 9 beta is out and I have to say looks wise I am impressed. Microsoft went the route of Chrome and gave it a minimalist browser look and that is a big plus. Also from a quick overview, it would seem they added their own Developer tools as well, shocking, but other then that it looks a lot better and it would seem HTML5 support is there as I have a couple of HTML5 based websites on my computer and I have to say I am impressed with it as well.

 

Now for the fun part, the acid tests, I made sure all the browsers were current and here are my results.

I have to say I am borderline shocked and impressed with IE9 results and if memory serves me correctly IE8 failed horribly at an abysmal 22 out of a 100. So this is huge for Microsoft to score that high, especially in beta. Hopefully they this number as well and try to see if they can bring up to 100 and start bringing back some of its glory it has lost since IE7 and IE8.

As a correction to the list provided, Opera 10.62 does indeed pass the acid test 100%. I also find interesting that the listed results show that Safari didn't pass the test and Chrome did though they both use Webkit. I suppose Google has made some changes to the Webkit engine for their browser. I will have to check this out the next time i'm in Windows.

Actually this represents the policy of Microsoft. New programs and new ways that work well are copied by Microsoft. Like the user interface of the operating program of Apple. And Internet Explorer can be considered to be a copy of Netscapce.

I had completely forgot about that website to test out HTML 5 compatibility and so after running the tests on all the browsers, even IE7 and 8 Here are the results.

Clearly Chrome dominates in the HTML 5 support and from the works of it, Microsoft has a lot a work to do and I mean a lot of work to do. However, I will say they have improved a lot since IE8 in terms of support but one would think they be in the high 100s. Granted HTML5 is a work in progress and odds are by the time it is fully accepted in 2025 (UG), IE 15 will be out and I will have gone blind. Of course, I am a bit surprise with Firefox 4, I thought it would be a bit higher then that but compared to 3 it is better.

Well IE6 was the best browser for its time, but when IE7 and IE8 came out, well lets just say everyone started switching, hopefully with IE9 people will start to flock back. As for the acid test score, they never passed it, they showed off that it was in the 90s and I do believe it was 90/100 when they first showed some screens.

If you look at all the browsers, there is nothing original in them, it is mostly tweaks in the engine that separate the browsers.

The way it looks, the window that appears when the browser opens, looks a lot like Chrome. What is the meaning of the numbers? Is higher better?

I stopped using IE since FF came out, but I was curious to see this new ui IE is flaunting. First of all, my internet is slow. I hated the fact that you had to Download a 45mb file, just to download it again. Why on earth would I want to do that? Anyway, after a system restart, I was able to see the newly ui'ed browser. I hate it. The tabs should not be on the right of the url bar. That's just crowded. I agree, the url bar doesn't need to be that long (as on chrome) since most urls are SEO friendly and url shorteners are used more and more. However, the tabs can't be crammed like that. I made 5 tabs with my browser and it was already clipping the titles of the pages. In more relation to this post, I'm glad to see MS sticking to standards a bit more. Its finally about time. As a web developer, I can say IE was losing my support at about IE 7. If they can pick up their standards a bit more, I think IE might get back in with the new big boys. Until then, Nice try IE, better luck next round.

I actually like it that way, It's takes less space but you can reduce it to favicon size if you want. I think Chrome's UI is the best so far... I'm so addicted to chrome that I haven't used another browser regularly for months now.

I found chrome useful as well. I downloaded the AD-BLOCK plus for that and things are going fine. You can also download other add-ons or what they call extension. Only thing for which i'm waiting right now is the extension that can count words for me when i select the text. I want for the draft usage.

Does this just judge speeds?And if so, what about the memory footprint?I'm using an older PC right now and prefer Chrome as sites load faster on it, however I recently found out it's using significantly more RAM than IE does (by a huge margin -- about 2 to 3x as much). I hate IE but I'm forced to use it for quite a few things because otherwise I keep having issues due to the lack of RAM.

I have no interest of ever downloading IE9, from looking at the screenshots I can tell this is just another failure from Microsoft.With Chrome 7 coming out, which Google claims will be 60 times faster then the already insanely fast version, Microsoft has no hope of EVER competing with Chrome. or even Firefox for that matter.

Tabs are a superficial feature and since your concerned about how tabs should displayed is a bit silly then do not use the browser it is that simple. Also try changing your screen resolution and maybe you can fit in more tabs in which you can see the text better.

I think Chrome is trying to play anti-hero in response to all the things you can do with Firefox and in a way make it a bloadted browser with all those extensions and features and what not. So Chrome went with a new direction and that being space, speed, and security, though the latter is usually the biggest priority for everyone involved in the browser business. However, I think the less is better angle seems to be a big thing since only Microsoft has switch to such a concept. Safari, Opera, and of course Firefox haven't gone with the minimalist theme, but odds are if you were to find a Firefox theme in their library then maybe its possible. Odds are though that Firefox won't try for a minimalist them until FF5.

The acid tests are about rendering various scripts and code and if rendered correctly then its a happy face or 100/100 score. Go here to read more about it to get a better understand on what the Acid Tests are about.

Well if your an XP user and do not plan on getting into the web design or web developing gig then that is fine. However, if your a **cough** Vista or Windows 7 user it is better to go with IE9 as it is more web standard then IE7 or 8. The same goes with being a web developer/designer because you need to be able to check your websites against browsers and make sure nothing looks out of place. Granted there are rendering websites and programs that can do it for you, but I prefer running it through the browser itself.
