Is There A Cheap Way Of Getting Ipb Onto My Site? I have very low funds, can anyone help?

Recommended Posts

Hi,All this time I've been talking about problems with my forums and things I'd like to do with them, and quite a lot of the time I hear you guys saying, "It only works with IPB" or "You should get IPB" or "I think IPB would better suit your needs". And I agree. I think I should get IPB.But I have a problem. And that's this: I'm VERY short of funds. I would like to be able to run an Invision Power Board on my site but I don't think I can afford it. I mean, I can live without IPB, I'm quite happy with my current SMF forum as it is, but there are a few mods I want to install that only work with IPB.Does anyone know a low-cost solution? Can I get IPB onto my site without having to fork out a load of money? All help appreciated.Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I would prefer it if I could have an IPB 2.0 forum, but I don't really mind.

i htink he meant to get IPB hosted on his own server =P. .I don't like those sites that offer free forum hosting because what you can do are so limited. Once, i got my hosting on freeforumhosting.com or something. I cannot do anything with it. yeah, i know what you mean SMF is great. but there are other forum clients that are better. Maybe you should try phpBB, alot of people preferr it over SMF. I heard phpBB have tons of mod you could install which is good. I would do the switching myself, but thne i checked their site, i didn't see any converter tool for SMF to phpBB. So i'm stuck with SMF =PBy the way, i odn't think you could get IPB for any cheaper, unless you decided to go and find those hacked version (dont' know if there is any) which is illegal =P.

phpbb is very moddable and is on the cpanel at the trap. If you insist on IPB, I think you would have to go back a few versions to get a free one. (v 1.3 ?) Other than that, using a hacked copy on this server will get you banned, just fore-warning you. And most Forums have a sleuth to determine eligibility, so I wouldn't install an illegal copy here if I were you. Others have tried, and lost.

Yeah I have a forum running on phpBB and another on IPB. Although IPB is highly configurable and feature rich it does burn a hole in your pocket. On the other hand phpBB is open source and as such they have tns of support and mods. I've tried phpBB forums for a custom made extension of a previous mod and they patched it up for me within the day. Now that's what I call support and its all for free! They update constatly and have huge range of skins to choose from too. So you better go for phpBB with the appropriate mods.

Hi,

All this time I've been talking about problems with my forums and things I'd like to do with them, and quite a lot of the time I hear you guys saying, "It only works with IPB" or "You should get IPB" or "I think IPB would better suit your needs". And I agree. I think I should get IPB.

To get IPB for free you've got to use an old version, like the one offered in cPanel, as these were offered for free by Invision at the time. Obviously, as this is an old version, there aren't as many skins, mods and patches available.Your best option is to use phpBB if you want the skins, mods and security, or use the IPB offered in cPanel if you really want IPB, but only old mods will work with it.

i dont' think cpanel offers IPB anymore. The only two forums they are offering are SMF and PHPBB.If i were to buy a forum client, i would buy vbulletin . by the way, where can i get the older version? I checked the invision site and couldn't find the link. =P

cpanel has ipb 1.2 but now since golden arrow wants to break the rules this topic is closed.
