How Much Space Does Google Have On Their Servers?

Recommended Posts

i really wanna know. this is like serious.. if 512 users sign up for gmail, then they use up a terabyte of space... now its more than like to have around hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people who would've signed up for gmail.. now this is getting a bit unbeleivable.. if a million people sign up... 2 million gigabytes... now where thats like nearly 2000 terabytes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!enough to store all the information that every human ever spoke since the dawn of time(k..k.. i am exxxxagerating) , now how does google store this much space????or is it just kidding... mayb they dont provide 2 gbs of space, they probably know that no person on earth can fill up 2 gigs... so actually the size might just be around 200 megs... so if you do use up 200 mb, the size increases to 300 .. etc etc.. just a marketing gimmick of sort... donnno. they might be true thoanyone who knows anybody in google?? and know the real truth?? or do they use the next generation in storage technology or something?????curious,Tariq

so actually the size might just be around 200 megs... so if you do use up 200 mb, the size increases to 300

yes that's what i thinking, but i sure google has more storage hardware than some other web hositng, therefore their can provide you 2GB web mail storage space without wait for increase your space from 200 mb to 300 mb. but i always wonder who and how do people get more that 100mb email? i only use about 5% or so in yahoo and hotmail, lets say if i add them up, still less than 5% for gmail. oh, maybe people use gmail as storage drive ....

Same here...I don't think google has that much of space...especially since the gmail inbox is still increasing now...I think...well..suspect....that this might mark the end of gmail....remember gmail is still in Beta phrase? The devs could probably increase the inbox space to 3 gigs or something and say....we have decided to end gmail...or something...and if you want to continue on...you will have to pay a monthly or regular fee...just like any paid e-mail service.......It would be sad...you know....especially since gmail is well received by most people...even my dad uses GMail...Well...a guess.....but not necessary to be true...and I HOPE it does not turn out to be true...-Shackman

Hi,Sure they have a lot of storage size but i do not think that they have one giga for every gmail account. It is a marketing point that worked perfectly for them. About the point that maybe they change this free email system into a paid one. I heasitate about it. I think they get more money with google adsense in every email account than they will earn with paid account. I bet most of the people will migrate to another account. Remember they parse every email content (I also think that it is not moral at all) and they publish publicity according to it. it is more probable that they create a messsenger to expand their market.

"lets say if i add them up, still less than 5% for gmail. oh, maybe people use gmail as storage drive .... " -- very true.... very very very true, i use only hotmail and I use it up about 1.5 something megabytes of 2,, i dont even see the necessity of a 1 GIGABYTE!! mail drive, even if they would've said 10 i would've been happy, becoz as far as i have seen, its one of the fastest online mail services i've seeen..!!"remember gmail is still in Beta phrase? The devs could probably increase the inbox space to 3 gigs or something and say....we have decided to end gmail...or something...and if you want to continue on...you will have to pay a monthly or regular fee...just like any paid e-mail service......." -- no way, i dont think they can change this to a paid service, i totally think this is going to continue, but with some changes.. because this is like madness,, imagine the amount of money they could generate with adsense on EVERY page!!!!!!, they got something like 800,000 visitors a day or something, imagine, out of which, 100,000 use up adsense, and .. 0.50$ for each click,, thats like 50,000$.. gaaaaawd!!! and think how much they could generate with paid accounts,,, get it?" I bet they have got the fastest internet connection in the world. AND THATS FAST! " yeah!!! they have like unbeleivable traffic numbers on their sites, and as a result, yeah, they should run on super fast, super secure, super reliable servers... i have never seen google off the web for any down time!!!!!!!! and btw, google.com is SO SO SO SO SO LLLLIGHT , they can cut down bandwidth costs big time...."It is a marketing point that worked perfectly for them." marketing... thats wat these people are exxxxtreeeeemely good at... not that no other service is available, its just that they are extremely good marketers of extremely good products... unbeatable,,and btw,, rediffmail offers 1 gig and is superfast,,, but they have got shiatloads of ads on their site,,, but the navigtaion through thte mail is simply outstanding, but not good enuff to beat gmail -_-Cheers,Tariq

its storage and bandwidth that makes you wonder how google offers their services. Its something amazing, but makes you curious at the same time. I would be intereted to know right from google how they manage it

Mmmh, maybe google secretely invented unlimitrd space harddrives for their servers? -_-But, I think its quite reasonable that they offer 2 gb... it would ocost arraund 2$ per accaunt (300 gb harddrive with 150 accaunts) fo space, and it doesnt create so much bandwith due to the smooth and fast interface, also I think it preloads the site so I think its only downloaded 1 time every visit

well,by looking at the counting box,we can know google give us gmail users more than 2G storage.but,in theory we could believe google offer so large space, just only by its harddisk, approximate spaceless.maybe we are puzzled on storage problem, because none has really finish up the whole space, which means no one knows if our gamil are 2.5G actually.

I think Gmail doesn't actualy have 2+GB for every account. They only have 100 or 200 mb because thay know nobody will use them. It's just for marketing. I don't even use more then 10mb...how can i get to 1 GB. Maybe if i won't delete my emails for the next 50 years. Now let's face it Microsoft will be gone by that time. No normal person could use that much space.Returning to the problem of marketing... Everyone buys different things just because they are "a very, very, very little bit" better then the other. So when I see 2gb of space i would say "this is great! i'll make an account"...i'll never think "well i really don't need that much space"

I too feel on the same lines. They might be over allotting the space assuming not many will ever reach their limit... Also, they might have lot of compression techniques that actually lower the space they need to store your mails...As for space... I feel they have oodles of it... coz just imagine the indexes that they have for google search.. also the amount of space they wud need if their new service that saves search history is used.. That wud save almost every search on google... ??????????????I suppose that itself would create huge huge chunk of data and I dont think I know the exact numbers even to calculate the storage that would be required...Cheers.

it could've been pratical... look, they give 2 gigs of space,, then why the 10 mb limit for uploading??(the whole point is, they are not comfortable with you using up their space.. then why offer such massive space?) see, so they dont want us to know how much space google actually has,, its nearly impossible to flood a 2 gig email account, and who on earth is goin to upload 10 megs 200 times?? as it is the upload speeds are bad... so only the people at gmail actually know the real space...but we can solve this problem.. we get a gmail account and we all share the password and we all upload files.. :D-_-

Yeah Google probably doesnt actually have 2 gig per person but i would guess that they use a compresion algorithm to cut down on the size needed. I know that numerous algorithms outhere (yes ones better than winzip) can shrink data to extremely small sizes. All google would have to do then is shrink everyones mail, and when they log in, unshrink it onto a temp holding space until they time out.

Defionatly a compression algoritum. No arguing there!

Back to the space. What does google offer?

Gmail (2168mb/user)

generic search (8,058,044,651 page indexs)

page caches (assuming 8,058,044,651 caches)

image thumbnail index and thumbs (1,187,630,000 thumbnails)

satelite images (unthinkable numbers)

Blogs (?)

google video uploads (upload.video.google.com)

translitation of all pages (something like 70 languages)

google groups messages

catalogues (6,600 full color)

"my search history"

web accelerator (whatever that is? webaccelerator.google.com/)

To add to the list, I heard that all information stored on google servers are saved 3 times seperated but at least one physical swich, infact appeantrly there was a fire that brought out six trucks, and didn't hurt the system as a whole. So X3 everything on this list.

Well, first of all, I'd just like to say that finding out how much space Google has on it's servers is like saying how many planets there are in the Universe. Google is such a big company that I would not underestimate it to have at least over 10 000 terabytes of storage. As others have mentioned above, Google would not simply give out "raw-space" to everyone, the 2 GB you get from Gmail is actaully existent only when you reuqire that much space. If you were to add the thousands of KeyHole satelite images that Google has, one can only imagine....
