Dsl/cable Webserver Help me

i heard that we can host a site with our residential internet service.. i did read thru some articles upon it and still cantt get enough info.. anyone out there can help me with that??

yes, it's possible. the question really is are you ready to have your PC (where you are going to host your site) run 24/7? it may take its toll on your computer, as you need it running to make your site accessible. it is possible it may burn out due to excessive use if no proper cooling system is in place. that's just one consideration. another is security... you are opening your system for the whole world to access if your PC is not properly secured.wouldn't it be better to have it hosted instead, like with Xisto for example? less risk for you. but if you still want to push through with it, tell us what you are doing already to set it up (from what you have researched so far), and maybe we can help with anything you might be missing.

First You should set up your Server software(I like Apache). After that is complete you need to get a domain name. You can get free domain names such as http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ or .cjb.net or just search online for free domain names. Make sure the free domain name you get allows you access to your DNS settings.Or even better buy a domain name. They are pretty cheap these days. You should be able to find a domain registrar for no more than $7-$10.After you have found your domain name and have your server set up you need to find a dynamic DNS service. I like http://dyn.com/dns/. Dynamic DNS is required because you may have to restart your server from time to time and your ISP will not always give you the same IP address every time you go online. Using a dynamic DNS service will update the DNS to the correct IP address if the address your ISP gives you ever changes.After that you should be good to go!

Sorry I forgot to add a step! After you have your domain name you need to point your DNS to the dyndns.org(or which ever you choose) name servers. Which ever dynamic dns service you use will tell you what thier nameservers are. Name servers should have an address similar to ns1.dyndns.org or ns2.dyndns.org.Hope this all helps you.

Yeah.. your right in terms of security issues and convinence.. for pro hosting.. i might buy a web space from the service providers.. but i just want to try out my PC to become a server.. just for fun.. ya noe.. i have a PC with 2.6GHz cpu speed 512mb of memory, linksys router and unlimited broadband internet connection.. so is it possible?? even if the networking field is still quite new to me.. i want to play around with it thou i noe it's lil risky..so any suggestion about where can i get detailed info??yours sincerelysoul sanctuary

2.4Ghz with 512 Ram should work quite well unless you have high traffic. (in which case Pro hosting is your best bet)I have used the setup I mentioned above myself on an old P2 400 with 128 Ram so your system should work great in comparison.If you want to have scripts and such installed though you need to install some sort of SQL server and PHP also. The more options you want the more technical things get. I would just get some free Cpanel hosting(Xisto is the best!) to check that stuff out before going all out on your own system.
